@ Algeroth:
NOOOOO! Please don't send the lads around again - I've only just had me knee caps re-attached!

@ Mattjgilbert
The foundation paints are fine. As long as you don't believe the hype GW puts out  then you'll like them. They cover well, tend to be very quick drying, and have a nice set of earthy yet pastel tones to them. They mix well with the other paints and inks, and are easy to apply. The negative side is that they dry out quick, and fur up the neck of their bottles quickly too. (I do have a bad habit of leaving the lids open while I work though.) I'm also not impressed with the yellow - Iyanden Darksun. Don't get me wrong - it's a great ochre colour - and served well for the golden tones of the badge on Cullns shoulder, but it doesn't serve as a very good base for the 'yellow' we tend to think of generally (brighter, cleaner.)

I can't say they have revolutionised my painting, the same goes for the washes, but I appreciate some new found vesatility with them, and they have speeded up certain processes. Overall I like them and would buy replacements when they run out. Give them a go - everyones technique is different, what suits one may not another, but I think you'll like them.

Anyway - enough of all that painterly talk for now - don't want to put anyone to sleep. Ain't he so puuuurty!?!?!

Jeez it's been a while since I did anything for this thread! I've relented and decided to let a few chaos boys slip into this thread, as I've just bought the Zhufor model from FW.

Loving the model, but his cloak is a nightmare! It's supposed to sort of slip between the shoulder plates and the body at the back, but needs to connect at a 90 degree angle to the body sides, which is fine, except the cloak is flat across! Guess I'll have to mess about with boiling water and try to shape the resin to fit the contours. Here goes nothing!

The detailing on that model is fantastic!
The cloak looks fine, is that a 'post bending' shot?
Looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

It is - and really well cast too. Same for the nurgle dread I've just had. I've never been so impressed by FW stuff before. The quality is really crisp.

err - sorry - no - that's FW's sales shot - I'm gonna photo when I've got it painted up for the thread though.

LOL, Herne enters his "greyscale" period of figure painting.

Actually not far from the truth - I use Halfords grey car primer for undercoating all resin, as it sticks better than the gw stuff to resin! Besides - what's wrong with grey? I'm thinking some beige slacks and a cardie with some matching slippers and Zhufor will be ready for the battlefield....

Ok - here he is pre cardie and slippers -

Re: 'Hall of heroes' Project log (Update: Abbadon)

Postby Herne » Sun Mar 07, 2010 8:13 pm

Having relented on allowing chaos termies in I decided to show two models I did previously. These were painted quite some time ago, and include abbadon and his twin brother ab-another-don. The propper black legion fella was hard work. I actually hate abbadons 'hand out showing his new wrist watch' pose, so decided to convert him. Anyone who has had an abbadon will know that the two shoulders are part of the body, and that one shoulder alone is actually wider than the body! That mean't cutting carefully down through the groove that separates his shouldr and body, where the spikes sit, and trying not to destroy the model. It eventually worked and with a dab of green stuff I managed to change the arm pose around so the claw is swept downward.

Image

The green fella was painted as a Nurgle HQ back before special characters were appearing all over the HQ section of codexes, so he played the part of humble chaos lord...
These days he looks more slaaneshi than anything. Sadly he does have the 5 fingered point pose.

I can certainly see the difference between your painting now and then. You have improved a lot Mr Herne!

Black Abadon looks a bit shiney; gloss varnish or just the light?

Why thank you kid sir! I would re-paint them, except I can't be arsd when there's so many nice models I haven't painted even once yet!

Actually only workshop spray satin, but a bit too thick and shines under bright lights. I think the black abbadon is better than the green one. Green was painted first, then black about a year and a half later. That was about 2 years ago. The picture doesn't do black abbadon justice - he's fairly neat compared to the green one. I do feel that my work has improved though, mainly through learning better and cleaner ways to paint corroded metals, so he might get a re-paint eventually....
