New Forge World site

Postby Spack » Tue Mar 30, 2010 4:00 pm

Forge World have just launched a new site layout. http://www.forgeworld.co.uk

Just got off the phone with them about the downloads (FAQs, experimental rules, etc) as they're missing, they've told me they should be back in a few weeks when they'll also be releasing the new updates for the IA books to bring them into line with the newer codexes. Not sure if these means we'll finally see the IA5 DKoK and Renegade lists revamped at that point, or if they're coming later still.

Much faster site now and easier to find stuff. But why on earth am I getting scroll bars on one of the windows on the front page? That's a horrible design.

Pleased to see the re-design and speed up - but second Matt on the horrid scroll bars everywhere. Gutted the new book isn't up yet. Apparently they were taking pre-orders for signes copies of IA vol 8 at the show last weekend. I was there Sat and they wouldn't let me place an order unless I was there Sunday and I was told to order on the new site Monday - but it isn't up yet. Poo.

What browser are you using? I'm not seeing any scrollbars in IE8 except in IE7 mode. In IE8 standards mode it looks fine.

Im getting scroll bars on everything - 4 frames on the front page.
EDIT: I am getting them on every item. None of which actually need them, since all of the image fits in the box anyway...

Plus the catalogue pic doesnt fit in its box on the front page.

Nice and fast though. :)

EDIT: the "show images" checkbox is a really nice touch - can we steal this for GF?

IE7 and lower box models are different to IE8 (and other browsers like FF, Opera, etc) so IE7 and lower will show scrollbars as the content is fractionally larger than the container elements due to the way the box padding, margins, etc are defined. Unfortunately it's an aspect that will get worse with IE7 and earlier as more and more sites move to standard formatting and give up with IE specific workarounds as IE8 no longer requires them.

Yah... I need to update from IE6 to IE8... (someone PM me if they know a good place to get it from, like someone who gets redirection revenue or something)

Redirection revenue? Just get it from MS, they don't pay people to pass out links to IE. :P

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/intern ... fault.aspx

As to the "Show checkboxes" thing, that's simple enough to implement, but without images for all products it going to look at bit crap. We can use box images, but we can't use images of painted figures from the GW site, so that's why all the blisters don't have pics.

Cheers for the link. I only asked since I saw some sites that had links for Firefox to earn cash, and I thought since I would be getting IE8 anyway I might as well do someone a favour if they had the same sort of thing. :)

I thought Firefox retired that cash referral scheme years ago. I can't find anything about it still being available, and searches for it just come up with posts from 2006/2007/2008, with the latest being about it ending in Sep 2008. I'm pretty sure it was Google that paid for the referral as they were bundling Google Toolbar with it, with Google Chrome there's little incentive for them to push Firefox any more.

It's the use of "overflow: auto" in the CSS along with the IE7 and lower box model. If they switched it to "overflow: none" it would get rid of the scrollbars, albeit at the expense of losing a few pixels at the right and bottom of the image. Still, I'd heartily recommend upgrading IE6/7 to IE8, it's a much better browser on the whole.

I can't help but think they just took the BL site and recoloured it :D Fair enough, it does the job.

That's why then. IE8 will cure it, as will using any other browser that uses the W3C box model handling.

Makes sense - they've then got only one application to support for the two child companies, rather than two different applications. It's what I'd do in their position :)
