Base Rumour - a bit of a "mixed bag"

Postby LordMalekTheRedKnight » Sun Nov 25, 2007 1:45 am

Hey all

I had tried to get a bag of 40mm round bases direct from GW Mail Order, but they told me they had been discontinued (as a result i bought a few individually instead). I asked my local indy store owner if he could try to get me some more (i need them for making Terrain), and he added them to my order - I spoke to him today and he told me that he hadnt been able to get any either (he had hoped they had a few bags left in stock).

he did have some news for me though: he said that "apparantly, they will be bringing out a mixed bag of bases instead" (IIRC, to be released next month/in about a month). no idea on the price, or exactly which bases will be in the bag, however.

makes sense from GWs POV - instead of stocking x number of different bases, then can just stock 1 bag that contains them all. it also means people will need to buy more bases to get the number they want, a lot of the time.

i know its only a minor rumour (not many people need to buy extra bases, as they use the ones supplied with their models), but i thought i would share none the less.

hope that helps :)

from what i've heard they will include 60mm bases too, which do make these aot ewasier to get hold of, which is useful, at least.

well ive just had a nasty suprise. :x

went in to pick up my bases, and GW have changed the contents at the last minute - you now get: 30 x 25mm bases, 5 x 40mm bases and 2 x 60mm bases (and the 25mm bases turned out to be the ones with slots in, which are completly worthless to me).

this is much much less than what they originally advertised - its down by 5 x 40mm bases and 8 x 60mm bases, its its seriously causing me to question the value of this bag. for example, if i ordered the 40mm and 60mm bases only, it only works out 25p more than (the GW price of) this bag.

grrr. this has really annoyed me now. i was so shocked that i left the bases there so i could go and check to see if it was a mistake. now i know its not, im going to go back and buy them - afterall, my mum is paying (although if she wasnt, im not sure what i would do :?). oh well.

hope this helps (even if just to save some of you the same disappointment that i felt when i went to pick them up). :(

Tim do you need the "nonslotta" bases? I could look for some and do a trade.

i dont really "need" any 25mm bases - its just i dont like the slotta ones, so when i buy metal models i cut off the tabs and use unslotted bases instead (most of the time, anyway). this means i end up with lots of spare slotted bases but im gradually running out of unslotted ones.

its not really an issue at the moment though, as ive bought (and assigned bases to) all the models i will be building for quite a while (until my birthday in March at the very least - although ive probably got enough to last me until Christmas, at the rate im going ).

if you need some 25mm slotted bases though, il glady sell some or trade them for unslotted ones. im not at home at the moment, but ive got at least 31 spare slotted bases (definately more, just not sure how many exactly EDIT: ive been home and counted).

drop me a PM or a post in my stuff for sale thread if you are interested. :)

it was the 60mm and 40mm round bases i was really after in this pack, for making Terrain. the ones ive got will do me for now though - i probably would have had spares if there had been any many as originally advertised (but im sure i would have thought of some uses for them...).

cheers :)

Well I can tell you after using GW bases and using Warmachine bases I like the Warmachine bases much better. Thanks to Tim or someone that passed me the link I am making some really nice bases. I use "wall filler" or spackle use some tape to cover the slot and fill it with spackle, let dry and then prime. I am loving my How to link.

I've now got no reason to use GW's 25mm plastic bases.

One of my brothers-in-law gave me a bag of stamped aluminium 25mm discs (3mm thick). He works in a metal fabricators.
Apparently they are punched from the metal sheet and discarded. The sheets get used to make mesh cage covers and the like. (There was a guy who used to take them home to use as poker chips) but Mark asked me if I could use them.

They drill relatively easily (only aluminium) and I have my dremel in a drill-press arrangement, and I can pin minis to the base with minimal difficulty and they save me having to get washers and suchlike to weight the base down.

He may also be able to get me 40 or 60mm sized ones, but not in the same quantity.

I'm lucky, I admit. I have a wife who encourages and supports my hobby, and a brother in law who also gives me freebies (bag of brass from his pistol club) - and one of his mates runs a model railway supply store.
