Postby conscriptboris » Mon Nov 21, 2011 1:22 pm

Well, there are 6, no 3, no 2 dexes.
What army do I play? = chaos.
I do not refer to myself as a chaos space marine player.
So ...

1. Latd/renegade guard/whatever.
2. Playable legions.
3. Return of daemonaic gifts, I don't want sergeants with power weapons, I want a looney that is identifiably attempting, which means is already on his way to daemonhood/spawndom = mutations. Give these idiots a tracable history!
4. Chaos vehicles/daemon engines, not just imperial left behinds.
5. Proper daemons.
6. A massive NO!!!! to sc's unlocking choices, do that with generic characters too.
7. Have a look at Bara's lists, he had some elegant solutions in there.
8. Playtest the fogging thing, I simply do not believe gw stuff is tested, or, if it is, its a bunch of sycophantic "yes men" with noses so brown that CENSORED!"

I think #8 is either pure laziness or the crime of ASSUME on GWs part.

Since the playtesting is done 'in house', the developers and designers ASSUME that everyone plays the game the way they do.
With the same "understood" house rules.
So many of the issues that come up in various forums never come up 'in house' because they were probably taken care of a long time ago.

Someone should remind them what happens when we ASSUME!

Here: 40k-rules-development/codex-chaos-marines-reimaged-draft-1-up-t5005.html

I've been working on a "better" one that integrates the God troops using the same method, and will also include Daemon and LatD armies as well.

TBH this is where I stand on 40k:
5th Ed SM Codex is IMO one of, if not the, best Codices they made. Bar untying SCs and the Chapter you want to play, and some little points tweaks, it's as close to perfect as they've come IMO.
Everything since then has been dross.
If I want every model to have a bazillion special rules including their own version of angry charge (Blood Claws), Poison (Gargoyles) etc, I'd play Malifaux (which I'm getting into) or War Machine or some other skirmish game where that level of detail is appropriate.
A toy soldiers version of magic is not my cup of tea and with the (lack of) quality of rules writing in the Necron Codex, and the amount it departs from the baseline game mechanics, I've pretty much gone from "Legions...? Whoo hoo!!!! :D ! to "call me when your business finishes collapsing and someone that knows what they're doing is running the show" levels of enthusiasm.

Maybe so, but I think I can trump your reasoning with my cynicism, skill level 9.5. :D
You do mean "arseume" don't you???

Bara, I'd argue that IG is the pinnicle. But granted, I like the SM codex (although it's a little bland on the troop front for my liking - the rumoured change to rapid fire in 6th may make Tacticals more interesting)

I've yet to look at the necron codex & I'm unlikely to until 6th peaks my interest (I hope)

Care to elaborate? I've been seeing some 6th edition rumors as well, but this is a new one on me.

I wouldn't because the internal balance is horrendous, and the TK and Nid book show that it wasn't a fluke ;)

Rapid fire will be able to shoot twice at max range if you stand still, once at max range if you move and you can still rapidfire at half if you move

Its possible a Chinese whispers one, but I read somewhere (possibly just a troll) on the interwebbs that aimed shot would be 2 shots.. basically to fix make shooty bolt guns (and those tau thingies) do something they were meant to do.. Lasguns already do because blob+commisar+ creed+ thingy makes them an invincible firing wedge..albeit at str3.
However I might have had it hanging over from the "leaked" 6th which was actually a fan expectation one (the rumour is repeated as cannon until its source is dark in mystery of time) ...I quite liked that one, seemed to be really gamy and quite a dramatic shift (basically back to speedy vehicles being faster than invincible vehicles who coincidentally could move stuff 30"s over the board)etc etc.
I hope the salt provided is sufficient.

Interesting, both!
I've also heard rumors that there are going to be a few added phases in each player's turn.
Something akin to WFB (which I'm not too familiar with!).

Hope not.. there is a reason kings of war was able to take most fantasy players in one fell swoop after current ed was released.

Yeah, from what I understand the general feeling is that KoW is more about playing the game and WHFB is more about learning the game.
Or somesuch like that.

I'm not too sure on that.

HQ - SCs are for the most part expensive, but I assume that this is a design philosophy to push toward the faceless guard, as the stuff they bring is actually quite useful (Creeeeed & Straken in particular, what they were doing with Yarrick though, god only knows)
All the troops selections are viable (aside from conscripts)
FA unfortunately suffers from the BUY MY BIG NEW SHINEY MODEL in the vendetta, but you can play a perfectly good army without it
Elites, yeah well the stormtroopers got boned (but their place is taken by veterans) & ogryns are still crap
HS I would argue that while not every tank is "teh ubar", they are for the most part, all viable in a decent list

Sure, a lot of competative lists look pretty similar. But you can say the same for SMs...
