Depends on the reason for a new army?

More competitive either IG or GK
Like the models, the one with the models you like the most
Fluff, the fluff your interested in.

I agree with Bane it all comes down to what models you like the most and to some extent what playing style. IG and Tau shoot the blazes out of the enemy but are not too good in close combat, Eldar and Dark Eldar have some sneaky tricks, Nids just eat everything in sight :D
I like my SW but don't like my IG, I find the IG too shooty for my tastes but again that is personal preference.

Depends on your character, are you stand at a distance and plot the opponents demise from afar, of do you prefer up close assault, or masses of troops pouring across the board, or specialist groups and weapons? or a mix?

if mix, id suggest the new necron codex?

Also thinks about 6th Ed coming out this summer, Id suggest to wait and see the new army's , if you cant wait, id then suggest the latest codex released (so it survives a bit into 6th).

Why not try Grey Knights, they've got a new codex and the new models are really nice, the one of the good things is that the cheapest ammount of points for a HQ is about 10 points i think, i dont have my codex on me, so then you can spend more points on other things u want like Troops and things like that and there magic is good and there stats are amazing. So if i wanted 2 start a new army i would think about Grey Knights
Thanks :D

no thanks on the grey knights have had bad experiences with the people who play them (no offence) plus i think the idea of a standard troop unit being armed with power weapons just a bit too beardy for my tastes

I would suggest Dark Eldar, as their poison weapons are pretty bad ass.

And their models are awesome too :-D

No one can decide for you, you gotta go for which has the models and fluff you like and also play style.. do a bit of research on them all then decide

Pick the army you like & go from there.

I like my IG for the simple reason that I can play it the way I want to. I can go mechanised infantry, infantry horde, heavy tank focussed, or if you like zooming around the table shouting pew-pew you can have an airbourne army.

If you like power armour, then it's simple to paint up your own chapter & then use them with any of the SM codexes out there. Bikes & tacticals in Codex SM, Terminators & bikes in Codex DA, jumping marines & fast tanks in BA, running around and shouting "FOR RUSS" in Codex SW, and crying in the corner with BT.

In addition, you can use the IG (and with a bit of creative thinking the SM) in the GK codex too.

It's more difficult with the Xenos codexes, but Orks have a number of different playstyles (kan wall, boyz horde, battlwagon blitz), as I'm told do Necrons.

Eldar, DE, and Tau are rather mono-build codexes, so if you like them, I'd do some proxying first to check you really like the way they play.

In fact, always proxy before you buy!

I have to disagree with you there Ljund, at least on the Dark Eldar bit. Dark Eldar have a very wide range of different types of playstyles that you simply have to learn to play right and they will do just fine.

You can run the blasterborn venoms, you can run a full Kabalite shooting, you can run Raider Spam, you can run a Haemonculus Coven, you can do an entier Wych Cult, you can run a super fast Hellion only list, and there are quite a few more mixed and inbetweens that work very well depending on your opponents play style and yours.

Dark Eldar, IMHO, have one of the most greatly varied codexes that if played correctly, can match just about anything. Yes, there are a few lists that shine well in the current competitive arenas, but I can take on a Mech IG wall with a Hellion based army and win, or at the very least, have a good showing of myself. I can almost match model conuts on a HAemy coven, Wych Cult, or Kabal list with any horde army out there, and still have a great game. Its all about learning how to use them.
