Postby killmaimburn » Thu Jun 07, 2012 7:56 am

As title, I'm moderately adventurous, but they didn't grab me by the throat.. I've played everything 40k official addon related that I can think of, apart from this, am I alone.. what were your experiences of it X years since release?
(I mean the tanks as formations no troops thingy not the scenario thingy)
Barely even lurking..

No we didn't play it either. Like you, it didn't really excite us.

Didn't really have the vehicles to get anything out of it.

Had several games as part of one of the Tempus Fugatives campaign weekends.
Ends up playing like a mini-apocalypse game.
Playing longways down the table is interesting, though it does make outflank very powerful.
The Formations either dominate or do nothing.
A pleasant format to play for a change at 1000pts (mainly so anyone who's enough of a git to take a superheavy gets shafted by being unable to take objectives properly)
When you wish upon a star, your dreams can come true.
Unless it's a meteorite falling to Earth, which will destroy all life, then you're pretty much hosed no matter what you wish for.
Unless it's death by meteorite.

I've played a number of Spearhead games with my Imperial Guard.
Works better when you do take lots of armoured vehicles, which favours Imperial Guard.
One game I had was my Guard vs Necrons, parking 3 Basilisks, 2 Manticores and a Deathstrike Launcher at my end of the table protected by 9 various Leman Russ was a bit nasty on my opponents - after 6 turns the Nightbringer and a group wraiths nearly made it to my lines.

This variation won't suit everyone or every collection but that's the same with Apocalypse - it does require time and Pre-work before you game.

Even then a 6 x 4 table is still a bit small, as Graham mentioned when I played Tyranids I had 6 units of Genestealers outflanking, opponent had nowhere to hide from me getting auto assaults!
Climax was my Scythed Heirodule outflanking his Warhound Titan and shredding it in 2 turns....

Downloaded it, never played it. A mate bought planetstrike, but we've never played it. I couldn't honestly say why though.

I have the rules and even recently read them again (there was a tournament based on Spearhead), but I don't really have the collection to get the most out of it. I think it really is a game for IG tread-heads!
