As the title says I am starting a new Dark Angels army and am doing a project log on it in the hope of keeping myself motivated, I am notoriously bad for starting armies and never actually finishing them unless I have a motivation to do it, in the past this was usually getting them ready for GTs. To give you an idea of how bad I am at this I have never actually managed to finish a WFB army despite starting just about every army there is and having played it since 92!
Right so here goes. I had been toying with the idea of starting a
DA army over a year ago, originally it was going to be a Ravenwing army but then I thought that I would use the unused
SM bits I have that I never quite got around to using in my vanilla
SM army so it changed onto a Mixedwing idea. Then I sort of lost my mojo for
40K with all the rumours that were floating around about it so the idea went on the back burner. Eventually though I succumbed to the Dark Side and bought the 6th ed rule book, read it and actually quite liked the look of it and decided to give
40K another go. Of course then Dark Vengeance was released and I just loved the
DA models in it so the idea of a
DA army came back to the forefront.
After getting a copy of DV and swapping my Chaos stuff for Elvis's
DA stuff, including the limited edition Chaplain model, I decided that this would form the core of the army. I then made the fatal mistake of going through my bitz box looking for
SM stuff I could use. I say fatal as what was originally planned to be an hours job turned into about four when I got side tracked looking at all the cool old models I had, along with several moments of "I don't remember buying that!" or "what the **** is that!". Eventually though my search yielded the following:
1
FW MkIVc Predator Annihilator
1 Whirlwind
14 Assault Marines
1 box of Terminators
1 box of normal Scouts
1 box of Scouts with sniper rifles
19 Tactical Marines (although they don't all have arms, weapons and backpacks)
2 missile launchers, 1 lascannon, one heavy bolter and one meltagun
A bikers torso with meltagun
A Rhino
Half a Razorback(!) with a
FW TLHB turret
Most of a
LR2 slightly damaged Landspeeders with a few bits missing
1
FW Dreadnought plasma cannon arm
So out of that lot and the contents of 2 DV boxes I tried to make an army. And failed! While there is a decent amount of possible units there I realised that it wouldn't be very competitive (and I just had to have a Dread) so I resolved to buy a few items, or more to the point get the wife to get it me for Christmas! Going back to the
DA Codex I came up with the following list, I know that its still not very competitive, mainly due to the higher cost and limited options of the
DA Codex, and it is also going to be changed due to the new COdex coming out soon, but it was mainly done to give me a frame work to work in. Here is the list:
HQCompany Master
Combi plasma, power sword
Librarian
Elites
Dreadnought with plasma cannon
DW squad - 5 Termies with assault cannon, CML and chain fist
7 Veterans - Rhino, power sword and meltagun
Troops
Tac Squad - 10 marines with plasma gun and plasma cannon. Rhino
Tac Squad - 10 marines with meltagun and missile launcher. Rhino
Fast Attack
Assault Squad - 10 marines with power sword, melta bombs and combat shield
RW Attack Squadron - 6 bikers with 2 melta guns, melta bombs and power sword
RW Landspeeder Typhoon
Heavy
Predator Annihilator
Whirlwind
That little lot comes to 2000 pts. It is worth noting that the same army, as near as you can get it, under the
SM Codex comes in at 165 points less.
So with the list sorted I got the wife to order me the stuff that I needed (as I work away we had Christmas VERY early in our house!). For the Veterans I ordered two of the
DA upgrade frames and will use the unused robed figures for sergeants in the Assault and second Tactical Squad. I also got one of the
FW Deimos pattern Rhinos for the veterans as well.
So now that I have everything I undercoated the two tactical squads and the
DW and brought them away with me to paint. I hope to get the first test model done in the next few days, I'm using one of the old Battle for Macragge models to do this. As soon as it is done I will post the pictures up here. I hope a few of you will follow this project, give me criticism and generally help to keep me motivated!
