Warhammer Fantasy - Swedish Comp System

Postby DaBoss » Tue Sep 10, 2013 1:24 pm

I've been a bit dismayed at the full-on Tournament style Armies being played at the Club since v8 came about.
I don't think it is all intentional (we all want to win), but fluff style armies seem to be pointless in taking to a club night.
For example last night my Daemons of Chaos Tzeentch based army is very max-min and pushing the rules to the extreme:
Lord - Lord of Change with 1 Exalted & 1 Lesser Gift (taking Chromatic Tomb & Wand of Whimsy)
Hero - 2 x Heralds of Tzeentch Lvl1, Karanak
Core - 5 x Pink Horrors (10) 3 with Standards
Special - 3 x Flesh Hounds (5), ambushers
Rare - 2 x Skullcannons of Khorne

So a lot of magic, good combat with Hounds and moving cannons!!
Plan: as Pink Horrors are Lvl1 wizards that gives me 8 dice in channelling (rerolling 1's), Lord uses Chromatic Tome if the Winds of Magic is low and the Wand of Whimsy stores a Charge Point on a 5+ for every successful casting and dispelling, adding +1 to Lord's Strength and Attacks (last night got up to +6 by end of game).

Still lost against Rob's Chaos Dwarves (but then I always do) but it nearly worked, some bad dice and unit placements on my side.

Rob had advised me on some Tournaments using this 'Swedish Comp' to rank players from 'Friendly' to 'Full-on Tournament' gamers - so that you play like minded players.

So ran my Army through the Comp and it came out with a score of 6.6 (Powerful Army), Rob's came out as 11.2 (Moderate Army) while a score between 14-20 is 'Friendly'.

In future, I might adopt this mechanism to play WFB, forcing us to play 'Friendly' lists.

Playing Chris's Ogres next week - will see how he scores?

You'll just force twinking.

Edit: Sorry I had to deal with the little one.

By that I mean you'll end up with people making the most powerful lists they can within that given points structure.

Problem is, people gripe about games being too serious, then start building lists with comp scoring in mind to win at morality.(tongue in cheek serious face)
Setting a line means people work up to that line, its human nature.

You then have the whole thing that especially smaller comp things tend to be some guy with an axe to grind/out of date obsession- but I don't play fantasy so I can't easily spot the '-10,000 if you field a defiler because I lost a tourney once to a guy who had one'
Of course I know none of the above is true about you guys

Sure, but when the line you are moving is "mathematical efficiency & synergy" (for want of a better description), there is still a noticeable effect from doing so, and playing to the line becomes less brutal when there WMD level is reduced.

Personally I'm a fan of Swedish Comp because it allows people to play around and get their favourite stuff in by compromising other areas, rather than the straight out "you can't use your toys" approach other comp gives.

I'm up for giving it a try Phil but as I've said before, adding a comp system just means breaking a list in another area. I did work out the nurgle demon list marc and I are taking to the doubles and its a friendly list, my standand dark elf army which I considered balanced scored a 3!

I'll try and work my army out using this system, not sure it will be too powerful though as I have a 3k army and that's it, so expect a fluffy(ish) list and we will see how it gets on, who knows it might do quite well!!!! (fingers crossed) :)

Well my last O&C list I tried comes in around 15. So compare to you guys around 5-6 it does explain why I lose most of the time :)

All else fails you can play me. It doesn't matter how good my list is - I can always lose!

well, I ran my standard lists through this and they are:
skaven: +23
tomb kings: +15
Vampires: +1
chaos dwarfs: +11

I'll call bs on the vampires though. They always used to get their heads kicked in.

The alternative of course is to simply talk to your opponents before the game so you can match lists together to get a fun game.

I have no probs with the system as I see it as another way of playing the game. Army lists would be tailored to fit a balance, although its only failing is the balance is so hard to get right and any loopholes will exploited just as army books are ie very hard combo is not penalised as much as another.

In the context of our club, will it make people play less tournament style armies or just swedish comp style tournament armies?

For reference my Tomb Kings score 14.

Off the top of my head:
vampire on zombie dragon (which in the current edition is a bloody liability, so why it gets me minus points I don't know...)
vampire or 2 low level necromancers
bsb wight
2 units 20 skeletons, full command, spears, shields
1 unit 25 skeletons hweapon, shield
20 grave guard hweapon shield
15 ghouls
70 zombies (mostly used for raising tbh)
a bat swarm
5 fell bats
varghulf
5 black knights with lances
corpse cart
a handful of wraiths with a couple of banshees
a spirit host with 5 bases
black coach

magic items / abilities: a couple of dispel scrolls and anything that helps raise skeletons, plus quickblood, thats it usually.

Dunno, it all adds up. The massive unit of zombies doesn't help, though to be fair its never been fielded as one unit.
