American Tank Markings

Postby skywalker » Sat Dec 21, 2013 2:11 pm

I am after some help with regards to how American Sherman Tanks were identified within a unit after D-Day. The germans used a 3 digit systen on the turets and I wondered if the Americans used a similar system. If so can anyone shed some light on this for me or point me in the right direction to locate this.
I have seen that in the Bolt Action rulebook there is a picture of a Sherman with the number D24 on the turret but I have no idea how to use this when puting together a large unit of tanks. I play Rapid Fire rules with 15mm figures/tanks and are currently heading towards two Armoured batallions of US tanks. Each consisting of 1 HQ Sherman, 1 105mm Sherman, 3 companies of 3 Shermans and 1 Company of M5 Stuarts. When gaming with this amount of armour it gets a bit confusing on which tank is with which unit so hense the question.
Thanks for your help
:D

Google is your friend!

The hard part, particularly in 15mm scale, will be finding the appropriate lettering.
