New game

Postby BANE » Fri Apr 18, 2014 3:44 pm

I am looking for feedback from the gamers in the raiders area, if I invest in a new game, which is my best option BA or DZC. I prefer DZC as its not just a 40k clone with WW2 models but the key to a new system is that others play it enough to get regular games arranged.

Thoughts

Edit, actually throw xwing into the mix too

I know I'm not from your area, but having played both games I can give a little input.

I'm with you on DZC. Awesome game. Its easy to learn, very different to any other game I've played. And the quality of the models is second to non.

Bolt Action is not a 40k clone in WW2 guise though. For a start it's a lot more balanced. No hugely varying stat lines. A German rifle is no different than an American rifle or Russian rifle. And it's Random squad activation. Both you and your opponent has an activation dice for every unit they field. All dice are placed in a box/bag and picked one at a time randomly.

Both games are relatively simple to learn, but complicated enough to keep them interesting. For me I picked Dropzone because I prefer Sci-Fi over WW2.

DZC is excellent. Tactical, fast paced, intuitive, well designed. In my opinion its a gamers game. if you want to try it out mate give me a shout ive got enough to play 1500pts of shaltari, ucm and scourge. Me and Ethan have been playing at home but I would love to take it to the club as I reckon a few would join in when they see it played.
Bolt Action is not 40k in ww2 but it might be Flames of war in 28mm. Dont get me wrong I enjoy the game but mainly because its played at the club and I like ww2 type games Its good in that the dice based system is a lot of fun and adds to the drama of the game. My only criticism is that the missions are very poor and the rules are all over the place and not clear. I have units that I can't use because the rules as written make no sense. There is a lot of muttering on the warlord site about this unit and that unit beimg overpowered. Ive scouted the dzc site and not seen anything like that.
All that being said if your looking for a cheap American Army I can hook you up.
Additionally if you're looking for a regular opponent id drop everything for a game of DZC ive been bitten that bad.
Id love to go to the next tournament but am in need of someone to compete with to build a better list first.

I have a half painted American army list with jeeps, a sherman and a half track.
I'll try and make a full list of models and let you know. Its a 1000pt list. Itll be cheaper than a box set although I dont know about postage costs.

I have spent in total about £130 on my BA American army and for that I have about 50 US infantry, 40 Paratroopers, 1 Sherman, 1 M3 1/2 track, 3 mortars, 1 50 cal team and an Airbourne 57mm A/T gun. Some people mock the standard Sherman but mine ( with its added hippy Tank Comander and blue watering can [watch Kellys Heroes for an idea] has managed to kill my mates Tiger 1E in 3 out of the 5 games we have played. In the other 2 the Sherman died (I think they were firing paint shells) This lot adds up to about 1600 points so I have enough variety to chose from without resorting to power gaming :D

Power gaing? As far as I know you can't power game in this game. I tried. I took two flamer shermans and two flamer teams. But they were no more effective than any other list I used.

Mr KinG I thought when you play a standard force organisation list you can only take 1 tank  There are ways you can create more powerfull armies that aren't quite historically correct, like have all your German infantry squads tooled up with StG44 Assault Rifles when in reality they weren't that common, issued mainly to some lucky NCOs and Officers and a limited number of specialised assault squads  Like all rules systems BA can be abused if you so wish but not to the extreme as some other rule systems (historical, fantasy and SciFi) that are out there.

Mr KinG there are no obvious "power" lists it is all down to how historocally accurate, for want of a better description, you want to build your army. You could take a force of US Paratroopers supported by a Pershing tank but there were few Pershings used in Europe and I have seen no record of Paras encountering them, although I might have missed some reference. At the end of the day it is how you and your opponent want to tailor your lists and play the game, afterall it is only that a game, which is meant to be fun :D

you shouldn't let that stop u DL.. as Ian says it is only a game, and for that very reason I would never let the history stop me fielding any list that the book allows. If the game was meant to be historically accurate then the game manufacturer would have made it so.

I like the history, I was never interested at school, but having played FoW and now BA I find myself watching discovery channel with a lot more interest and I am therefore more knowledgeable than I was.

But then I play the game as a game. If the rules allow you to take it, I have no issues with playing anyone with it or against it. After all, the chances are the game is more balanced because of it. In history, armies didn't make balanced lists to fight one another. Generals would always try to seek some advantage and attack the enemy where weakest. So if were gonna play by the history, then someone is gonna get out numbered, ambushed, blown to kingdom come, before the battle starts, etc, etc.

Not only do you have to worry about points and army options with historical games you also have to look at time lines and supplies chains when picking a list.... I know Nige you don't care, but as it's been brought up it's obvious people do play like this. And not only that they look down on people who don't as power gamers with WAAC armies. In the past I've even seen people derided for having the wrong camouflage or shade of colour on models, not only for the army but for that particular year being played.

I'm NOT having a go at anyone who plays like this, hats off to them as long as they are having fun I don't care. But that is why historical games just aren't games for me.
