According to "Waargh the Orks", the first published book from
GW that contained a hint of the background to the Orks (the Rogue Trader rulebook only mentioned a bit about society organisation, and that humans and orks didn't get on from the first time they met), states that the Ork expansion into space was due to the "brainboyz", who were snotlings that had genetically mutated brains from eating a rare fungus. These snotlings became masters of the ork races, and in turn forced them to harvest the fungus. Some of the orks ate the fungus while harvesting without their masters knowing, and became more intelligent, eventually overthrowing their snotling "brainboyz" masters. Fungus harvesting was neglected, and eventually it died out, and Ork society regressed to the brutish animals we know and love today - still more intelligent than before the first brainboyz came along, but no longer having the advanced technological knowledge that first got them into space and expanding.
Brainboyz are not the "old ones", they were always the snotlings.
However, all the info
GW published back in the old days was written from the point of view of the imperium, and the background to the Orks is based on imperial recovery of stories and drawings of the Ork history. This allows
GW to change the story whenever it feels like it, and point to the old information as historically incorrect. I've not seen anything in the
RT era rules that remotely suggests that the brainboyz were anything but the fungalling enhanced snotlings, and nothing since.
