Games Day UK 2008 Pics

Postby Spack » Sun Sep 14, 2008 8:02 pm

Pictures from Games Day UK 2008 have been uploaded to http://www.ageofstrife.com/gallery/Spack143

Highlights from GW include new Marine and Ork models for 40k, and new Chaos models and codex for Warhammer.

From Forge World there were a couple of surprises - the WIP Ork Warboss on Warbike (note Ogryn with handler with Hounds of Xaphan at the far left), another WIP Ork Warboss bike (a different model than the other), Deathwing Drop Pod assault cannon and missile parts to fit to the new GW plastic models, and WIP photos of the Greater Daemon of Tzeentch (the model is still a long way from completion but should be available sometime next year) - the GD is taller than An'Graath, and is impressive even though it's not complete; the sculpter is working on it in his free time while he's at Weta, hence the amount of time it's taking to be done. The expected Minotaur, Lord Zhufur, and Ork Nob Bikes were there too, as well as IA6 and the Masterclass book.

In the Marines cabinet there were some models that I personally hadn't seen before - the Land Speeder Storm, an open topped extended speeder that can carry 5 Scouts into battle; and Marine casualties, 3 marines in various states of injury lying on the battlefield which would be ideal for objective markers and dioramas.

For Orks, a new warboss model along with the new plastic gretchin were on display, as well as the plastic mould for the battlewagon tracks.

Plenty of Chaos warriors for Warhammer were there too, and new dragons models which were very nice.

The GW gaming table is also not the foam one previously seen in mock up images - the actual release is a modular plastic board, which will be £100. GW are also releasing a range of bags for carrying models, paints, and cases - the largest of these is £75 and carries 2 large GW tank cases at £75, but does not include the cases!

More pics are being uploaded, so keep checking the gallery for updates.

I'm amazed you haven't crashed out - I was going to try to have a quick chat but you were running around dealing with orders so I thought better to leave you to it :) Hopefully I got pics of all the important stuff, but I always seem to miss things.

I think its the "Hounds of Xaphan" model.

Basically its 3 hounds led by a Ogryn Handler.

Added a few more pics from the little accessories catalogue, click pics for larger versions.

Image Image

The large case holds two GW tank cases - but doesn't include them in the price. The backpack holds 1 standard GW case, again not included. The smallest bag includes the paint/tool holder, and can also be used as a laptop bag.

The basic set is £100 for six 2' x 2' plastic board pieces in a canvas carry bag, they are modular so you can arrange them any way you like. The £234 price tag is for the board, 2 Imperial Sectors, 1 Moonscape set, and 2 sets of Urban Barricades & Walls.

i called Kate over to join me as i laughed at these... but then i remembered how difficult it was travelling with figure cases etc when we went on holiday this year, so maybe they arent so crazy afterall...

is the bag divided into sections to stop the paint chipping as the piece lay on top of eachother?

did they hint at a 4' x 4' version?

see this really bugs me about GW. by my calculations, i make that all add up to the same amount if you bought it separately (where you could save a load of money by getting non-Direct Only parts from somewhere like GF). what a bloody cheak GW!! if you sell a bundle like that, its supposed to save the customer money. if it doesnt, they may as well pick what they want rather than have it chosen for them!

why not just round it down to £230? :?

they do this in stores as well where they made it look like a special offer/bundle deal, but really its the same price as if you bought everything separately.

p.s. cheers for posting all the pics Dan - i wish i could have been there myself, but this is the next best thing. :P

The gaming board will have add-on sections later if it proves a good seller. For instance, river sections were hinted at. So you might just be able to pick up odd sections later instead of a complete board.

I doubt they'll do a 4'x4' version - they'll just expect people to buy the 6'x4' and just use 4 of the boards.

The bag prices are nuts - get an expanding travel case from Argos, it'll be about 1/3 the price!

i guess i will just wait and see what happens...

the main draw of these seems to be the portability, and i dont need that feature anway. im sure i could get a better static board for £100 as a commission..

i just meant that it would be nice to have a bag specifically designed to fit the figure cases inside. :)

heh. im not planning to play Apoc (isnt my cup of tea), but i do intend on making a 1500 pt PDF force (waiting for the new IG codex) and im still ammassing bits for an 1850 AdMech (counts as WH) force.

its just that when i start playing games at that size again, i will do so at my local games club (my table at home is 4' x 4'), so i wont be needing my own board for them.

in the meanwhile, im having plenty of fun at CP level. ;)

so no, i wont be buying a 6' x 4' table from GW, as i will either be playing on a 4 foot board at home or at a club that already has modular boards of its own. :P

cheers :)

Just sending a thanks out, Ive finally finished looking through all those pics some really awesome stuff there.

I must say I'm very impressed with the plastic board for the price its much easier than making one and the fact i can expand it to make a really awesome apocalypse board is a huge selling point to me as i am lazy and it should be easy to store and travel with if needed. As far as the bags are concerned its like a lot of GW's accessories they are there for convenience people will buy them because they cant be bothered to go elsewhere or because it has GW on it, they aren't for everyone.

I showed my wife the pics of the gameboard and she pretty much told me to buy one :P She's not a gamer at all, but she appreciates that playing on a plain table is not as nice as on a textured board :)
