Super facepalm... if the site admin is going to create a subforum specifically to help you find stuff you might just possibly have a read of the threads he has sought out and clumped together for you..
Read the "So you want to play Warmachine? ", no I'm not providing a URl its in the same 3 threads only so far subforum as this.
(I appreciated it spack

Yes the core rulebook(s) note they are on mk2 (don't buy an earlier one by accident on ebay), it has the Main rules (different to the basic rules) and an awful lot of units from each force.(to the point at which the codexs are really only for the completist IM(touristy)O
For a free dip into it.. the manufacturers web site.
http://privateerpress.com/warmachineQuick start rules
http://privateerpress.com/company/warma ... s-are-hereNote as you've now read in the thread about the first games me and LH had this is a very brief thing, involving no infantry units and very short sentences that can often be read 3 ways (it helps to have the big book around to get the rules right)
Also the quick start rules BACK have some big shiny robots/sample units and most importantly their damage charts..(which take a while to get your head round its like old titan wounds kind of)
Factions fluff
http://privateerpress.com/warmachine/we ... warmachineNote actuall on-table merits of each could probably do with fleshing out somewhere.
Same stuff for hordes is on their site.
Points = you decide on a points value, you get a discount depending on which charector/warcaster you have, some allow 6 extra points some allow 5 etc (each faction has several to choose from just in the main rulebook let alone codexs)..this is your allocation to spend on big shiny robots, whole units of infantry(which I still don't understand) etc. Most stuff (inc big shiny robots) costs between 4 and 9 points)
For proxy first game (like we did see thread) you will probably have 1 impressive 40k guy for your warcaster, 2 termies for light warjacks (to do with base size) and one dreadnought or something to represent a heavy warjack.
Don't worry about points just play a guy who takes the relatively the same stuff from a different faction. You'll still get tied in knots (like we did) Warmachine is a skirmish style game if your opponents deployment zone is crammed full of models you've done something wrong.
