Postby niteterror » Thu Jun 23, 2011 6:20 pm

Hay all
lately i've bin looking into warmachine and trying to justifie its worth getting my self a box set and having ago however im not quite sure what to do to start so i thought id ask here for some advise.
1) Is horde compatible with warmachine e,g armies from one can play against the other?
2) how do they make the armies even is there some kind of point system?
3) if there is a point system whats considerd a good game?
4)last but note least is there any units i need to start eg hq and 2 troops?

1. Yes its basically the same game.

2. yea theres a points system

3. personally I like about 35 - 40pt games but without knowing the point structure thats not much help lol

4. Your hq is a warcaster. you always have a caster and if he dies you lose. the starter boxes are great as they are pretty fun straight from the box and you can just build upon it slowly and still have lots of fun..
If you and a mate are looking at it then you'd be best waiting for the new boxset as its great value and gives you a great starting force.

Super facepalm... if the site admin is going to create a subforum specifically to help you find stuff you might just possibly have a read of the threads he has sought out and clumped together for you..
Read the "So you want to play Warmachine? ", no I'm not providing a URl its in the same 3 threads only so far subforum as this.
(I appreciated it spack 8) )

Yes the core rulebook(s) note they are on mk2 (don't buy an earlier one by accident on ebay), it has the Main rules (different to the basic rules) and an awful lot of units from each force.(to the point at which the codexs are really only for the completist IM(touristy)O
For a free dip into it.. the manufacturers web site.
http://privateerpress.com/warmachine
Quick start rules
http://privateerpress.com/company/warma ... s-are-here
Note as you've now read in the thread about the first games me and LH had this is a very brief thing, involving no infantry units and very short sentences that can often be read 3 ways (it helps to have the big book around to get the rules right)
Also the quick start rules BACK have some big shiny robots/sample units and most importantly their damage charts..(which take a while to get your head round its like old titan wounds kind of)
Factions fluff
http://privateerpress.com/warmachine/we ... warmachine
Note actuall on-table merits of each could probably do with fleshing out somewhere.

Same stuff for hordes is on their site.

Points = you decide on a points value, you get a discount depending on which charector/warcaster you have, some allow 6 extra points some allow 5 etc (each faction has several to choose from just in the main rulebook let alone codexs)..this is your allocation to spend on big shiny robots, whole units of infantry(which I still don't understand) etc. Most stuff (inc big shiny robots) costs between 4 and 9 points)

For proxy first game (like we did see thread) you will probably have 1 impressive 40k guy for your warcaster, 2 termies for light warjacks (to do with base size) and one dreadnought or something to represent a heavy warjack.
Don't worry about points just play a guy who takes the relatively the same stuff from a different faction. You'll still get tied in knots (like we did) Warmachine is a skirmish style game if your opponents deployment zone is crammed full of models you've done something wrong. :D
Barely even lurking..

I like warmachine, the models are pretty poor (IMO), Hordes on the other hand is a far more exciting mechanic and better models IMO. The only difference is way that you generate magic (FURY in Hordes, FOCUS in Warmachine)m, which means that the systems can be played against each other.

I like it, it takes me back to my youth of small skirmish games, which 40k used to be.

The models are horrificly pricey - i.e. roughly the same as 40k - but the ebay market is slow, so there are relatively few cheap ways of getting into it. However, as the armies are far smaller than a 40k game, the total cost of an army is much lower.

There are a few cheap ebay sellers around, but they are few & far between, otherwise you'll be going with Maelstrom, Gifts for Geeks, or Wayland games. Hopefully Nige or Gav will see the light...

The starter boxes for each faction are good value, but make sure they are the models you want before you buy them. The Warmachine ones are relatively good, but the Hordes ones seem to be a random collection of beasts (especially as Hordes tends to be more infantry heavy than Warmachine). As stated above, there is a 2 player box set coming out which is excellent value for money if you can wait a few months.

There used to be a mercs starter set, but they didn't reissue it when they turned the other warmachine boxes to plastic. I wouldn't go with mercs as a first army, they're a bit more complicated than "oh look I can take anything that looks cool together from my faction book" although feel free to add them to your existing force and expand. I have around 70 points of khador, using a few mercs, but mostly jacks.
