Warmachine - what were we thinking?

To cast a spell its just the cost on the card. However, if its a remains in play spell, you use only one focus to upkeep it at the start of your next turn. If you want to change the target or recast it, however, you will need to pay the full focus cost again.

WHAT!!!!
Dammit, we implied an 'A' into the sentence summary rules so you had to pay one *to be able to* cast magics..
but you are (of course correct) p74 can cast by paying the cost of the spell, A spell can be cast multilpe times as long as the cost can be paid..
That adds an awful lot more magic to our games.

yeah that would certainly change the game a bit - i had my second real hordes game last night and it was really quite magic heavy. only having the ability to cast one spell would have made a really different game, but probably still an interesting one!

by the way, having spoken to some of the more experienced players, the light at the ned of the tunnel is that if you learn the warmachine rules and then want to play hordes, you only really need to then read the warbest and warlock sections from primal as the mainstay of the rules is thesame - i'm sure its not quite that simple, but still.

Well, it felt wrong, but I only re-read magic in full over the last few days...

For the love of the great Invisible Pink Unicorn (May Her Holy Hooves Never Be Shod)!

More questions!

Terrain - how much? We went with around 25% last night, 4 buildings & a wood. KMB took a massively shooty Cygnar army, my Menoth army was able to hide & be "chiored" (ranged guns cannot affect jacks) all the way to the objective & into combat beyond that.

Units - we had our first game with units last night
We had no idea what we were doing...
Shooting at units
a) do you target one man per gun you fire (for example: a unit of cygnar gunners firing at a unit of mine, does each gunner need to target a separate person in the target unit to shoot at)
b) how do you allocate damage (for example: a warjack with a chaingun fires at a unit & causes 7 damage, is that spread around the unit, or is it allocated to a single model?)

Is combat dealt with the same way?

Good grief this game sounds complicated! Is it just very different to what you are used to?

I think it's similar to 40k, but different enough to be confusing!

I'm enjoying learning a new system which we have no previous experience of. I'm not sure Toby's in the same boat...

Since its a skirmish combat game, I would go up to even 50% terrain, but I play more skirmish that you do it sounds so am more use to tables littered with terrain.

It has been awhile, and I havn't played version 2 yet, but I believe its like 40k, Unit to Unit combat. All members also have to shoot at the same target I believe as well.

b) how do you allocate damage (for example: a warjack with a chaingun fires at a unit & causes 7 damage, is that spread around the unit, or is it allocated to a single model?)

Damage is spread. In units, for the most part each model is a single wound. There are some units where the models may have a dmg chart though, so you woudl need to verify to be certain if yours does or not.

Is combat dealt with the same way?

Yes, damage is damage

You pick a target for each model firing, and they can each pick a separate target, from separate units. Its not unit to unit combat really. If a model can shoot multiple times, they can target a different unit with each shot.

Remember that all targets have to be in the models forward 180 degree arc, unless the model has a rule saying that that they have a 360 degree front arc.

In your example, the warjack with chaingun would have inflicted 7 damage to a single model, in all likelihood disabling it, boxing it, and destroying it, then removing it from play.

Melee combat is similar - you pick a target for each attack with each of your weapons. This is where warjacks have some other models have some useful attacks if surrounded - trample power attack, and moves such as thresher (as on my fave khador warjack, rules wise - he gets to make one attack against every model in melee range and forward arc, and he has reach, om nom nom light and medium infantry)

And if you want to confuse yourselves even more for a bit, look up combined melee and ranged attacks...

Hope that helps.

Oh noes!

jlong's version is KMB's reading (unit by unit shooting like 40k)

Socadict's version is like mine (model to model shooting)

Now I's confused!

Well, it HAS been a long time since I played and I may be remembering the rules wrong. I would definitly take teh word of a more seasoned player over myself

Socaddict is right.
Units took me a while to get my head around after playing 40k so long.

I'd probably go for 25% scenery at the mo..
water can be fun as it can extinguish a jacks furnace..
forests are a must.. mainly because I have a Circle army ;)

On units, if you read the sections on Combined Mellee and Combined Ranged attacks it tells you any members of the unit can combine to attack any elegable target, and then adds an example where the 2 blokes who can't join their serg and other lads in attacking enemy 1, combine to attack enemy 2.
