Warmachine - what were we thinking?

Warmachine - what were we thinking?

Postby Ljundhammer » Mon May 23, 2011 8:05 am

40k - it's so simple! Well, it blooming well should be, I've been playing it for over 20 years!

Here lies the chronical of my first foray into a non Games Workshop wargame.

Wednesday began as normal day. An unearthly calm had settled over the realms of midlands-earth as the sultry summer haze rose from the meandering brooks and streams, skylarks sang, mice frolicked in the fields, and badgers did, well whatever it is that badgers do. Elsewhere in the realms, things were stirring. An internet drama of unequalled proportion had shattered the peace. The previously benificent rulers of the kingdom, Games Workshop, had seemingly swayed to the dark side over the last years of its rule, but its latest edicts were (aparently) from the very mouth of hades itself.

The serfs of the kingdom were moved. Moved to find themselves a new ruler, a ruler without an evil intent to control the kingdom with an iron fist. A ruler who website was easy to navigate. A ruler who could get an errata out in a reasonable time frame. A ruler without the evil sock puppet Mat Ward. A ruler with MAT, RAT, and POW! WARMACHINE WAS COMING!

But before that, back to Wednesday. KMB & I had tasked ourselves to read the rules & arranged a game for Sunday. Seriously, we've played GW for ages, we even understand some of the rules (which is more than many), so how hard can this "easy to get started" game be? Well apparently very.

True to form, Ljundhammer devotedly stole a rulebook, stole company time & paper & ink, opened the rule book & immediately read all the fluff in it. Which took 3 days. Which meant that in one day he had to read all the rules. KMB, in his low cunningness had found a 'quick start' rulebook, but, so satisfied was he in his cunningness, that he didn't read it.

Thus we arive at Sunday. A hodge-podge of 40k figures, 2 rule books (both unread), a bag of dice (which Ljundhammer was assured we wouldn't nead as he remembered the bit of the rulebook he'd read which stated that you'd only need 6 dice), a small wall for some terrain, 2 cups of tea, a 4'x6' table, a woman (!), a cat, 2 chairs, well, you get the idea.

We found a bit in the quick start rulebook that had some sample armies, and we therefore removed most of the models we'd put on the table & started the game.

Once we started the game, we reaslised that we actually had no idea what we were doing, so in true manly style, we blustered our way through it, fully utilising our powers of bluster, bullshit, and borrowing rules from other games systems. This game, so alien to our GW addled brain, was mind-blowing. It took us about 30 minutes (the length of time of a normal 40k game for us) just work out what this 'focus' thing did, how we got it & where it went, but due to the power of "making stuff up to make the game run quickly", we probably fudged that too!

It was good, we rolled loads of dice, we marked things on bits of paper, we took things off the table, but neither of us are exactly sure what any of this meant, and, indeed, if any of it actually meant anything, nevermind happened in any meaningful rules framework.

To summarise:
we played warmachine
we didn't know any of the rules
we rolled some dice & some stuff happened
we have about a million rules queries
this is a placeholder to ask the rules queries, but having a post with "placeholder for rules queries on warmachine" seemed quite dull!

I havent read the rulebook either and so, feel quite qualified to answer any questions you may have, but maybe not a million.

Are you sure you played warmachine, how would you know?

We played what I imagine was a lose interpretation of the warmachine rules.

Kind of like performing a ballet version of reservoir dogs yourself rather than watching the dvd I would imagine...

OK, we'll start with really stupid questions:

1) In melee how many attacks does a jack get - we assume only 1 (with bonuses for Focus as used)

2) Can you 'fight back' in melee in your opponent's turn - we assume not

3) In ranged combat can a jack always fire a weapon up to its RoF? We assume yes

4) If you spend focus to increase ranged attacks does a RoF 2 weapon get to shoot 3 times, or is it capped at 2 - we gave up at this point & just punched each other (& so did our warjacks...)

I'm a Hordes player, or at least i'm starting to be, so my answers may not be 100% correct, but it may help, you never really can tell in advance.

1) on the cards i use, my models have a number of melee attacks equal to the number of 'weapons'/arms they have - i play trollbloods so in the main they have two attacks for the big guys as they have two arms and as you say i can increase attacks by giving them fury points which i beleive are the equivelent to your focus. I also get a bonus attack for charging, so you guys may do so also

2) not as far as i am yet aware. maybe something yet to find. If my guys leave an ongoing combat though i think the opponent gets a free attack at me

3) that is how hordes works, check the gun symbol though as somtimes that has a number, some shots may be d3 etc etc

4) not a clue.

sorry if my answer has done nothing but take up your time, but if any of it helps then i'm glad. Truth be told, i found hordes mkI a bit confusing, mk2 is a little better.

Drax, I find going to the toilet confusing, how do think I feel about a new rule set?

We fond the bit about a free attack, so you've preempted my question there.

On the melee attacks - jacks with 2x CCW get 1 attack with each then?

That would be a reason to take the light 2CCw one I guess.. (we were trying to work that out for ages)
We could learn like we did with bloodbowl through the PC
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WxAUjj4L ... re=related
(unfortunately it appears development ,or at least communication with the outer world on it, ceased in aug 2010)

I can't actually find a PDF FAQ (I can't even find the 2010 oct, one which I have already)/..all I can find is the first ed errata group- http://sites.privateerpress.com/FAQ/war ... category=4

However this appears to be a Stoopid noobs read, guide
http://www.ogrestronghold.com/forum/ind ... ic=13277.0

And this appears to be a one stop shop for all the bits and bobs we didn't use but should of,
http://privateerpressforums.com/showthr ... s-Resource
(oh none of the links indexed in the one stop shop work, will try to find a newer one in a forum somewhere when I next get 3 seconds...doh)

I still say KOW would be simpler (watched the vein in LHs throat bulge at the mention of fantasy and ducks)
Barely even lurking..

I was going to mention KoW but didn't want to upset LH...

However LH - it might be worth reading the rules even if just to make sure other game systems CAN be easy to understand! :)

Gah, fantasy!

This may be the first step on the road, after all, I do have a GW orc fantasy army, mostly unbuilt, somewhere in my house...

WE NEED ANSWERS PEOPLE!!! Otherwise I'll have to go to Warseer! Don't make me go there, the bad people touch me!

1. as Drax said you attack with all melee weapons and can then buy extra attacks with focus/rage

2.Not unless a special rule allows it.

3.You initially make 1 attack with each ranged weapon as with melee but you can buy extra attacks with focus. ROF is the max number of attacks it can make during its own activation (this can be exceeded outside of its activation although I cant think of an example of top of my head).

4. RoF 2 means your initial attack + 1 bought with focus.

I don't know Warmachine, but the questions you are asking seem confusing enough.

Listen to Matt - KoW is the way forward. The rules are only a few pages (A4) and even I can understand them. Models are cheap and quality is improving all the time. I'm just waiting for my Tesco shares dividend then I'll be getting an army...

Warmachine isn't that hard, just helps if you have someone who does know the rules talk you through it.

I can probably answer most rules questions too.

OMFG!

I've been trawling around (insert other independent hobby store in Leicester)'s website.

HOARDS! Oh my giddy aunt! Those Trollkin & Skorne are really sexy! Much better than the warjacks... I was thinking I'd have to do some major convertting/scratchbuilding to make warjacks look less "2nd ed 40k", but hoardes are pant-creamingly good!

I'm a going Trollbloods I think! Must. Read. Fluff. (and rules I suppose :()

Huzzah!
