Warmahordes lists wot I am making

Warmahordes lists wot I am making

Postby Ljundhammer » Thu Jun 09, 2011 3:52 pm

Ohhh, I know enough about the rules to make a list - look at me!

How does this look:

eDoomie (6)
Mulg 12
Earth Born Dire Troll 10
Axer 6
Min Kriel Stone Bearers 3
Min fennblades with officer & drummer 7
Janissa 3
Total 35

My thoughts on the list are that I want to make it as fast as possible, get into melee & smash some stuff up. So to make that work (I think) then I have:
eDoomie's feat - prefereably turn 2 or 3 to get me into melee
Axer animus - does what it says on the tin
EBTD's animus - on Mulg so that they can stay together
Janissa's magic walls - to give boosts to the trolls as they advance with EBDT's animus & inate ability

The KSB just seems a no-brainer to me, is it really as good as it looks?

Once I get close, then I'll hopefully be able to open charge langes with Janissa's tremor magic...

The fellblades are mostly in there because I like the models, but I'm not sure they bring as much to the table as Kriel Warriors.

So what do you think - am I barking up the wrong caber? What changes should I make, or should I just start all over again...

I know nothing about trolls so cant help lol.
I shouldnt worry too much about lists as models in warma are quite flexible compared to 40k
Im not sure when Im gonna make it round for a game as Im working 7 days at the mo.. you thought about anywhere to meet up?

i play the regular doomie, so i may be able to help. he's a good support caster but keep him behind a wall. remember that a caster can take wounds to generate fury, so his hyper regeneration will be useful early on

with the kriel stone bearers, max them and take a stone scribe eldar attachment - that way you can put almost all the full amount of fury into them in turn 1 to syphon off later. the SSE will also help you negate any incorporeals or stealth units (Skorne Void Spirits and lots of the Circle) and he can help protect against continuous effects. keep them back and as the last barrier before doomie!

i love the fennblades, have them on order myself

the axer is a good solid light warbeast, i begrudge not using him, but the day is coming when he'll be on the sidelines! given you plan on two heavies which can hold a lot of fury, even taking on board its doomie (both have fury 7) a third warbeast may be one two many and perhaps another unit (Trollkin Champs or kriel warriors) will be better

Mulg is a nasty pasty, and so is the earthborn but i'd consider a warbeast with a bit of range - the impaler has a nice ranged attack with a good enough animus for himself! perhaps a pyre troll for a bit of continuous effect damage.

speaking of continuous effect, if you think you will face Circle a lot or you'll play against warmachine opponents, spare a thought for the Slag Troll! go have a read and tell me he isn't a must!

Hmm, I was thinking about the 3 beasts...

I'm not giving up on the EBDT or Mulg, they're pretty much the reason I'm looking at trolls (along with the Mauler). The Axer's animus is very difficult to ignore!

If I were to drop the fennblades & swap them for:
Min Kriel warriors - 4
Stone scribe elder - 1
Whelps - 2

Do I even need infantry?
I could intead take a Slag Troll & SSE...

to be honest i intend to take a mauler and either a bomber or a blitzer

the problem is fury management - whilst it is easier for Hoarluk than the others as his fury stat is higher, you are still going to struggle if you take too many warbeasts as you will struggle to avoid them suffering from frenzy.

eDoomie will find it easier still using a combination of attuned spirit and wild aggression to power up at least two of the warbeasts, so perhaps 3 in total will be a good idea.

but, the benefit to infantry is that they can perform tasks without being forced and also increase your numbers.

we've found quickly that the players that take a larger number of infantry to those that favour multi warbeasts/warjacks tend to do better in the long run.

basically, too many big beasties mean that shiny magic man struggles to keep big beasties calm, but a couple of big beasties with a few little beasties in units mean that shiny magic man can keep the big beasties happy and fight better while the little units of beasties can gang up on the bad guys.

thats the bottom line really, the rest of it is just padding

Hmm, I'm thinking now that Mulg is a bit of points sink... If I take him out I may as well lose Doomie too...

I quite like the beat you face option of Madrak(e or p) and/or Borka, but I also like Angus, and Calandra just looks funny!

If I were to run, say:
EBDT
Mauler/bomber
Axer/impaler
Pyg burrowers (damn they look good!)
Fenblades/Kriel
KSB

Note - I've not got a codex on me, so I'm not sure, but that should be around the 35 point mark)

Which caster would be set? I'm leanung towards either eMadrak or Calandra... But there guys mean that the way the army fights would be totyaslly different - looks interesting - yes or no?

I'm softening in the debate between 2 bigs & 1 little v's 1 big & 2 littles, but I'd rather stay with the former as the models are better...

calandra could be quite interesting with high fury warbeasts, as well as having the same fury as doomie, she can use soothing song to syphon off fury to either cast other spells or to take off extra fury that she won't manage to take in her next control phase and then just discard them. she can allow a re-roll when needed, and also, even though her melee attack isn't particularly good, she at least has auto boost as long as she is attacking a damaged model.

Madrak is obviously a get your hands dirty kind of a warlock, so will do better close up (which he will have to be anyway compared to calandra). I'd suggest if you take madrak, you'd do well to have a few kriel warriors to take his wounds for him

At this stage you are looking at you options from a solid and considered view point, i'd start by getting the common elements up to about about 20 pts and just dabbling from there

Here are my current ponderings. I've started to collect a few models as they appear for cheap on ebay...

35 points
Borka Kegslayer
Dire Troll Mauler
Axer
Slag
Min KSS + SSE
Min Kriel warriors with UA & 2 x cabers
Min fennblades with UA

Which goes up into a rather nice 50 points
Borka Kegslayer
Dire Troll Mauler
Axer
Slag
Min KSS + SSE
Max Kriel warriors with UA & 3 x cabers
Max fennblades with UA
Max pyg burrowers
Janissa Stonetide

Which, I think you'll agree, is a rather long way from where I started!
I still like the EBDT, and for a point I swap him for the Mauler & lose a caber. Not a bad trade off either way I think...

I'm really not feeling WM to quite the degree you are..I'm at the 'alright for a kickabout' rating...(and I'm still not buying anything for it :P )
Speaking of which I've kidnapped other other Mark (yugblad over at BGG) to join us this sunday.. he wants to play more miniature based games so I'm hoping to lure him in more.
This sunday I've arranged for him to show you quite how awesome the command and colours game system is (easy and clever).
Any preference between napeonic representation and ww2 representation (memoir 44)..it just decides which boxes he brings.
