8th ed army size

Postby mattjgilbert » Tue Jun 22, 2010 9:19 am

Chatter on the various forums suggests people are thinking that the typical 8th ed game will be up to 3000 points. I've only scanned through it so far but the new WD pretty much confirms that with the sample armies they demonstrate (2500-3000 or more) with some big infantry blocks.

I think my orcs are going to be OK for numbers but my high elves are going to need some additions. Luckily the starter set in September is rumoured to be rats and HEs so I can go halves with wolflord havoc to boost the ranks of my elves and his skaven.

How will this affect your armies?

Well given the battle report uses 3500pts and the few games played at the club - it looks like a 3000pt game plays in the same time that the 7th edition 2000pts played.

NOTE: WD has the tournaments dates posted and WFB is still going to be 2000pts.

So guess will still be playing a lot of 2000pts to get in practice for that.
Will be interesting to try old style armies vs new formations and see how they perform.

My Skaven are hardly changed - addition of some more Plague Monks to get 40 strong horde unit, loss of a Warlock Engineer.
Whereas my Vampire Counts army is total change as having to take 500pts of core instead of 3 units of 10 Skeletons.

As to purchases to bulk up my armies not really needed - just need to get some more models painted.
Currently collection stands at:
Beastmen 4000pts
Bretonnia 2000pts - Only army really lacking in size
Dark Elves 4000pts
Dwarves 4000pts
Empire 9000pts
High Elves 2500pts - New Box Game will be useful here
Daemons of Chaos 10000pts
Warriors of Chaos 4000pts
Lizardmen 3000pts
Ogre Kingdoms 2500pts
Orcs & Goblins 3000pts
Skaven 6000pts
Tomb Kings 3000pts
Vampire Counts 10000pts
Wood Elves 4000pts
Dogs of War 4000pts
Chaos Dwarves 3000pts

Not buying anything to bolster my armies. I always went core heavy anyway. The only sticky point is my chaos dwarfs. I believe my army may break the hero limitation. But I don't think anyone will mind to be honest.
Will I shift to 3000pts standard? I don't know. Right now I'd say no, but you never know what might happen.

Ive been moving towards 3000pts for a while now and I think Ill be sticking to it.

Im still trying to decide the right unit sizes. Every army Ive worked out so far has large units in but Im thinking the best way to go is one or two large main units with a few support units to back up.

Any thoughts?

Yes this is what I imagined would be the typical set-up (not that I've played yet). 1 large unit and then more smaller supporting units.
