Chaos in the Old World

Postby mattjgilbert » Thu Sep 30, 2010 11:22 am

I picked up a copy of Chaos in the Old World while at Games Day last weekend. The guys were also demoing it and we got to play a few turns (after I bought it mind!).

The game looks and plays fantastically well. It is very well balanced and the games we’ve played have been close between all players. The luck element is low so it’s down to strategy and players playing both with and against each other. With multiple ways to win and each faction (you take one of the 4 Chaos powers) playing differently, each player must keep on their toes.

Everyone has really enjoyed playing it and can’t wait to play it again. I imagine it will only get better as we all figure out the best ways of playing the different powers and also discover the hidden depths of the game.

The game says it’s for 3-4 players but I think 4 is the ideal number. Just 3 would really change the dynamic I feel.
For £45 it might seem expensive but for the quantity and quality of the components and for the game itself it’s more than worth it.

Nice review Matt.
Might look into it.

I've got it, but not got round to playing it yet.

FFG do good stuff, I've also got BSG and Talisman.

I have some original version of Talisman.

I also picked up the Chaos Marauders and Death Angel card games at GD too.

"The luck element is low so it’s down to strategy"

Ahem - I did at one point roll a load of 6s which denied the Nurgle faction (Martyn) Victory the turn before the Khorne faction (Moi) won.

Other than that yes it was down to strategy and all 4 of us could have won in the end

Dice rolling only affects the battle phase. Everything else is down to cards played and placement.
