Taking 3k of High Elves to the club tomorrow for their first outing under 8th. Taking on Chaos Warriors. Onpaper they look mean but we'll see how they play.

Well that didn't go as well as planned. I didn't take named characters but took a level 4 archmage, a level 2 mage a Prince and a hero.
First bound my archmage failed to cast got hit by the black tongue from chaos and caused a wound on himself and his colleague.
In short my magic didin't work so well and chaos did, they cast infernal gateway on my swordmasters and I lost the whole unit!!!
Plus points my silver helms with the prince road down 20+ Marauder infantry and kiled the demon prince.
The archers shot down 10 Marauder cavalry in two bounds, niggled away at the chaos infantry. Ellyrian reivers kept the chaos nights occupied most of the game using feigned flight.
We had to finish on bound 4 which had me ahead on points but three units of chaos nights had made contact with my spearmen and archers and they were doomed to die in droves.
A good game, but I need to magic up more. As expected the elves in combat are fierce for first strike but pay the price if there are sufficient bad guys left to have a go.

Nice one for the update, have heard a few units vanishing to the infernal gateway lately - our local player with Chaos seems to be reluctant to play with them at the mo so will have to hold for a game. 3 units of chaos knights was very nasty to deal with and with having such a bad magic game always going to struggle.

you have a level 4 and a level 2 yet you feel the need to magic up more? This has been a pet hate of mine in 6th and 7th that you needed to spend stupid points on magic or you were doomed. I thought and hoped 8th had sorted this problem out for good.

That's an interesting point - with the limit of 12 power dice, it's hard to 'magic up' your game. I guess what is meant is that the randomness of the level is what you want to control.
I've played a number of games where the magic has rolled up low and left you high and dry - a big risk for a magic heavy army.

I actually like the fact that Magic has been tamed in this way (except when it comes to my Vampire Counts).

You now have to plan on which is the most useful spell to use that turn than launching lots of magical missiles.

On the defense side, as you can only take 1 Dispel Magic Scroll, I've started looking at the other arcane items available to see if they are worth using - still not sure.

A level 4 & a level 2 as backup seems to be the maximum needed unless you want to spam a particular spell (vampires). To be honest even then the level 2 is just backup incase you fail to cast or dispel as most dice will end up going through the level 4.
In terms of magic items anything that gives you dice is now worth its weight in gold. Vampires can very easily gain a massive advantage with Master of the Black Arts. The best though are items which take away dice from your opponent.
The Annulian Crystal, Master Rune of Balance and the Staff of sneaky stealing should be almost compulsory as the level of effect they have on the balance of dice now is insane.
For 15pts if you have any spare I can see the Staff of Channeling being very goog. On average it will give you 1 extra power & dispel dice per game (a wizard will channel once to cast and once to dispel in an average 6 turn game). For the points this is a bargain though not being predictable can suck.

In the case of Vampires or any other race that wants to get multiple low level spells off (i'm considering with my warrior priests) The Tricksters Shard gives your opponent something else to worry about on the critical turn (in my case just as I reach combat) The effect of having to judge dispelling against wounds is a nightmare especially against aggressive wizards who have already taken damage from their own miscasts. Do they shoot with the damaged level 4 or suffer the penalty and roll with a backup wizard or without any bonuses....

In terms of magic up more I think it was more a case of I had two bad bounds in which I lost my level 2 and I should look at how to protect them a bit better.
I didn't take a dispel scroll and should have.
The lore of metal was good against chaos but I just had below average throws through the game.
I like the new magic far better the limit on the powert pool helps significantly but when it goes wrong it goes wrong and sometimes its difficult to recover. To be fair its the first time my sons magic has come together for chaos. in all the previous games it hasn't been noticeable. this game it just hurt when it mattered.

Had a great game last night Vs the high elves with my dark elves. What has been said in previous posts rang true in the game. The HE are nasty and the re-rolls to hit are a big help but HE are still very expensive and will lose in a war of attrition. I lost the game last night due to my own tactical error (need to remember the reform rules!), not because the HE are cheesey Most of the combats ended either in a draw or a loss by 1 which lead to a very bloody game and therefore a great game! I look forward to playing the Colonel again and taking revenge!
