High Elves in 8th

Postby Cobby » Wed Aug 11, 2010 10:21 pm

Just wanted to get some opinions on the High Elves in the new 8th edition Warhammer - People who have played with and against. I have used High Elves for about 10 years and personally finding the new amendments very brutal and make the army almost unbeatable with all the striking first and most of time re rolling misses in combat and find no real need for tactics now with them.

Jeez - I thought the words would never come out of your mouth! ;-) Have to say after watching the game against Da-Grot U played last night - I can see why. They just murder everything in shooting, in magic and in the combat phase. The more games I play in different systems the more the game comes about winning by using a force well, however poorly I might have written it. (And boy I can write them.... ;-) )With 8th and Elves it strikes me the challenge is taken out of the game, because it's almost impossible to write a bad list....

Oh I am sure you can write a bad HE list if you try.

All you really need to cancel a lot of there advantages is some magic that reduces their I or boosts yours above theirs.
Then when you hit them they are T3 elves with a low save and die in droves.

The same can be said for Lizardmen led by a Slann Mage Priest.

To beat both these armies you have to consider their strengths and weaknesses (which you should do for all armies).

Strengths
* Always Strike first with high Initiative - great for getting the first kills
* Lots of choice of magic plus a great Special Character
* Lots of shooting backed up with solid Spear ranks - Lothern Sea Guard only real Core choice

Weaknesses
*Step-up now stops High Elves killing front rank and not being hit back
*Irresistable Force is bad to have - most spells now cast on 2 or 3 dice
*Hard for High Elves to muster Horde style units, so they must trust to small elite units
*Low Armour Save on most units combined with Toughness 3, they will lose models in combat

So far it has led to lots of games being won by the High Elves and with the new boxed set, we will see many more.
For the moment it does look like a 'point and click' force and army builds will look much the same.

But I think in time, people will see that they can be beat.
For example - my Skaven Clan Pestilen force will give the High Elves a run for their money.
Large Furnace led Plague Monks which you need to kill all of them before it hits your lines
Hell Pit Abomonations will soak up lots of shooting, unless you pull out the Fire Lore
It will have lots of bodies to soak up the damage in a battle of attrition.

I also think Warriors of Chaos will do well against them.

What did you play against last night with Da-Grot? How about posting Army Lists so we understand your force and why it makes the army easy to win with?

Im going to be playing against 3k of Rob's High Elves with my 3k Dark Elf list Monday although I expect this may well be suicide for me now.
I rather think the rules re Always Strikes First were written that way so people buy a new high elf army, which coincidently the new box just happens to contain.

Everyone must be using different bow rules to me then.... because BTs aside, HE shooting is terrible and a waste of investment.

HE are incredibly vulnerable to ranged attacks and attacks in CC (even if it costs you models to cause casualties).

Also apply to Skaven, and they are even more powerful than HE.

I think the HE only really excel in the magic phase, they are good in the CC phase but not amazing, they still die in high numbers. Shoot is not a HE strength in anyway in my book!

Were HE become really difficult to handle is when they use their strength in the magic phase to boost there already better than average CC ability.

Appreciate some good feed back and opinions everyone - I will get lists sorted and posted - I do agree with you Bane that a bad list can be written for any army let alone High Elves. At my club I just feel sometimes you can just say well done you beat me good and fair as from some of the comments plenty of people are not concerned with the High Elf rules and army book and getting plenty of wins against them. Will get some more games played I think.

Most armies have had a boost of some sort in 8th Ed it s just the High Elves ones seem very strong on paper. When they came out in 7th with ASF, everyone was crying cheese and broken yet once people got a few games under their belts it turned out they were beatable, the same will happen now.
They are still only elves, T3 and low armour, meaning they will die in droves and as they are quite expensive they will probably run out of men before the enemy does!
Going to give mine an outing this week so will report my thoughts as well.

you roll 2d6 to see how many hit u cause on the unit, then roll 2d6 for strength. if u roll 11 or 12 for strength then the unit and any character in it are removed from play with no saves of any kind. ever. i dislike the spell. a lot.

Played a game today with Zhatan The Black who used my High Elf list I used beastmen for the first time. Had a great game but managed a win with a lot of death on both sides but with so many more models with the Beatmen won the war of attrition. Ogregut look forward to seeing how your game goes.
