Hiya guys, so I want to start an Ogre Kindoms army, I've got the army list... But I was wondering what to start buying first.... No idea where to start... I was thinking about loads of Gnoblars so I can get them painted and out of the way first as theres so many of them...
Anyone else got an ogre army, and can tell me whats hot and what's not etc etc ? :)

Hey,

Well I dont know a thing about Ogres but know a bit about buying armys.. The battalions are always a good start but I have a feeling there isnt one for the ogres.. so your best option is to identify your core choices (I assume gnoblers will be one of these) and get those painted up and save the better units till last.. theres nothing worse than getting something cool like the new trolls or boar boys painting them all up then having to paint up the 100 boring gobbos/orcs next.. if you want to get gaming straight away buy a leader too so you fulfil force allocation (i assume it follows 40k in that respect) I hope this helps :)

Ogres will be filthy in 8th edition so the battalion is an excellnt way to start as it is probably the best one for value. Once you have it painted i would recommend getting a second as you will want the smallest units of ogres to be in two ranks of three minimum as that will give them a point of rank bonus and the second rank providing three attacks each. Of course having a monster unit of eighteen will be awesome as well because they will all get to fight if they are six wide.

Oh, and definately take a tyrant. He will quite literally eat other characters...
"Crom, i've never prayed to you before, i have no tongue for it.
No-one, not even you, will remember if we were good men or bad. Why we fought and why we died.
All that matters is that two stood against many, thats whats important.
Valor pleases you lord Crom so grant me one thing, grant me revenge.
And if you do not listen....then to hell with you!"

I agree with TheColonol - it sounds like ranked units of Ogres are going to kick **** so I'd focus on this as the core starting point.

Orges are defo getting a big power boost!

Got myself a small ogre army which I will be expanded soon, I think what Ill be going for is a couple of units of 6 Bulls with FC and iron fists and LA. That gives you the bull charge (maybe), 19 S4 attacks, 3 stomps. The unit is quite tough as well, 18 wounds, 5+ save and a 6+ ward from the new parry rule

My hammer will be a unit of Ironguts lead by a Tyrant. Thinking at least 7 Ironguts (4x2).
Just noticed you can only have up to 16 Ironguts in a unit, which is a shame as 18 of them would be brutal! Tho I guess 16 and two characters would work!

Leadbelchers are also very powerful now, take 5 in a unit and you get anything from 10 -50 Str 4 shots plus they can all attck in combat!

Gnoblars are very important for support. They are cheap and give the ogres rank bouns, make them deep enough and they will almost always be stubbon!

Yhetees are a bit of a mixed bag. Their fast movement and ignore terrain means they can flank quite well, but as they can't break ranks unless you have at least 6 after combat. At 65 points a model I doubt that we will see many huge units of them. On the plus side the new fear rules are really good for yhetees. If a units fails it fear test they will need 6's to hit the yhettees (WS 1 vs WS4 and aura of frost).

Scraplaunchers are now awesome! The new stone thrower rules coupled with bigger units means these will hit alot of the time. True its only Str 3, but killing blow will make even chaos warriors worry!

Maneaters are not as good as they were. I've seen them used as a one ogre speed bump, there stubbon holding up units. Now with a lot more attacks coming at them I dont think they will last as long

Same goes for the gorger tho these will still make great war machines hunters as they are now!

The slavegiant is still not good, lots of attacks and no stubbon means he won't stick around for long!

Gut magic is again a mixed bag, no more one dice casting if you only have one butcher, so you'll have to roll at least 2 dice but generally you will have more dice to cast with and as all spells are 3+ to cast they will almost always be cast!

Tyrants and Bruisers are still as nasty as ever!

Good luck, may the great Maw smile on you!

Yep - I'd get yourself a Battalion Box Set, Tyrant Model and a Butcher as your 1st purchases.
That should get you a 1150pts force (excluding Magic Items) to start with.

Small force but should be very effective.
