Winning with wood elves

Postby General_Lee » Tue Dec 15, 2009 10:07 am

Just got the beginnings of a wood elf army and played my first game last night against my freinds dwarves. I got wiped out. We played 1000pts. My list was the contents of the battalion box, a nobel, a branch wraith and a great eagle.

Does anyone else play wood elves and can recommend future choices to boost my chances of a win?

I don't I'm afraid. The wood elf armies I have seen were:

1. All treemen + dryads etc. This was a force to be reckoned with.
2. A more typical force but with the eagle riders which caused some problems for their opponents.

However, I only watched the games briefly, I didn't participate so I cannot offer any advice :(

I think BDA was muttering about getting one but that will not happen for a while yet.

I tend to go for a combat heavy army, with lots of wardancers and wild riders.

What you have is a good core building block to the army, next I would pick up a treeman and some wardancers to add a bit of a punch. More dryards are good as well, a unit of 8 make good road blocks and redirectors.

The usual force is treemen, dryads, minimum archer core and wildriders, backed up with lots of wizards.
The tactic was skirmishing hell plus lots of shooting. It doesn't work quite as well in 7th ed, but I'd still think twice about playing against it as I consider it a waste of my gaming time.
Hopefully you can find some more interesting builds utilising the other three quarters of the army list.

essentially, yes.

The Dwarfs are a tough opponent to beat, so playing them at their own game is difficult to do!

you are far more manuevrable than he is so use your units carefully!

your skirmishers need to pick their targets (and be large enough to soak up the wounds - dryads in 18s, Wardancers in 10+. expensive, but necessary to survive) - try and get it so that you attack him in the flank and rear with a couple of units simultaneously - your skirmishers don't negate rank bonus, but you will stop him from gaining the benefits of hand weapon shield, and if you combine the charge with a unit of Glade Riders (which although don't get ranks, they do negate them, you can take a couple of points away from his CR.

use your magic to move wooded areas to slow him down further or bottle neck him

soften him up with archers - remember you can move and shoot, he cannot!

use the army like leaves in the breeze, move in and out of danger whilst he is stood there trying to catch up!
