Discussing rules for WFB

Characters and wounds

Postby mattjgilbert » Thu Sep 02, 2010 4:09 pm

A couple of things I've wondered.

1. If every model in a unit must take a test, I've always rolled for characters (and each command group model) individually. Is this correct or should you just roll dice for all models and then allocate as per normal (for shooting, command group removal etc)?

2. A unit is attacked by two other units (front and side). Enough models are killed that only the character remains and is out of base contact with the unit which was in it's flank. Can the character be hit by the flank unit now (as it's not in btb contact (e.g. stomp attacks at the end of combat))? No time for a ptretty pitcure I'm afraid. I'll do one later if I'm not making sense.

1. What kind of test do you mean? If leadership or morale, the unit take the test as a whole.

2. If a model is attacked by 2 units, you declare if you are attacking one or the other or splitting attacks before the combat begins. If a character is splitting attacks between 2 units, it doesn't matter if a character is no longer in base contact wiht one or both units, the attacks are still resolved normally because the determination of who can fight is made before any blows are struck.

I think the only time enemy losses would negate an attack would be if I had a character in base contact with a model from unit A and unit B. I decide to put all my attacks on unit A. Before my character gets to attack, all the models in unit A have been eliminated by another unit, my character could not now decide to attack unit B, it had already declared all its attacks were to be against unit A.

Hope this didn't confuse things even more. If I missed or messed something, please clarify.

I think MattJ is refering to Warhammer Fantasy, not 40K.

1. The Standard Bearer and Musician, I believe, can essentially be replaced by rank and file guys, so they are not removed to the end. I'm not so sure about the Champion.

2. In 8th edition, since we typically pull casualties from the rear rank, this situation won't come up until the unit is whittled down a bit, and ven then, I don't think the Champion can be directly attacked except in a Challenge. Characters added to the unit work a little differently. I think they need to be in base contact to make their attacks. If charged in the Flank and Rear and the Character isn't in base contact, he can be moved within the unit. I would suggest moving into base contact with both units if possible.

However, this is based off only one game in 8th and a number of years of not playing before that. I am probably completely wrong.

1) usually the typre of attack will specify whether hits are distributed like shooting, otherwise you'd take the test against the unit as a whole i beleive, so use the t,s,i or whatever value of the unit and take casualties only from the unit unless the attack specifies that you may attach hits to specific models.

remember that with the musician and the standard bearer that wounds are always taken against normal rank and file first, when thery are all dead the next one to die is the musician, then the standard then the champ (unless he gets killed by other means) you cant lose the standard unless its him and the champ left or you flee from combat

2) you can allocate attacks against champs and characters if in base, but otherwise no, however at the start of a round, if a character or champ is not in base to base with an enemy, he may move so that he is, but cannot opt to move out of btb.

hope that helps

Yes TW...this is Fantasy not 40k ;)

It's just the whole "every model must take" I've always assumed meant you should roll individually for specfic models. Otherwise what would you do if models had different T or S or whatever to roll on?

Pooling the opinions from here and Warseer, it seems to be that:

You should treat the musician and standard bearer as just regular troops so you can roll for them along with tother R&F models (and only remove them in order should there be enough casualties as oper normal rules).
For the champion and any characters, you should roll for each model individually.

Which is how I'd thought it would work (and how we played it). Makes sense really.

Thanks all :)

I agree. with your conclusion above - its also how we have been playing it.

With regards to your 2nd query / question - I actually have a similiar query posted here:

http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=274333

I believe that the flank unit would be able to make its stomp attacks - theres rule on page 61 - regarding shrinking units / mutiple combats that I believe applies here.

No rule book on me so will have to check later. The question came about due to a hell pit abomination having hit an already engaged unit of blood letters (what remained of them) in the side. When it was time for its thunderstomp the only model left was skulltaker who was not in b2b contact with the HPA.
