Caught out on weekend special again ...

Caught out on weekend special again ...

Postby Spack » Fri Nov 16, 2012 5:13 pm

Note to self - do not purchase tanks midweek! Last night got an M3 Lee, decided to work up to the T29 on the US tree. Today find that this weekend the M3 Lee is half price! Argh! Almost every tank I've purchased in the past year has been on a half price special within 2 weeks of me getting it, bar the E75 which I picked up at a discount a couple of weeks ago (and have since sold and replaced with a Panther, what a great tank!)

Don't forget that the M3 gives an extra 25% credits for the rest of the month, and that the M3, the Pz III, Pz IV and Marder II all give an extra 50% credits for the next few days!

Haven't had much chance to play today - been busy working on the model railway (see my blog and quarter 4 topic for more details). Tomorrow is my son's birthday so very little chance of playing again. :|

I've just started - and I'm getting slaughtered. I keep hearing the words "that's gone straight through". Only to then see my tank explode due to the return fire. Not yet putting any money into this one. I'll see how it pans out . . . .

Watch out for spaced armour - you can penetrate over and over and still cause no damage. It's one of the most annoying things in the game.

3 words. Shoot, then move.

And if your shots are going right through but not causing any damage, it could be;
spaced armor like Spack said
you need to target a different part of the enemy vehicle
you need to get closer

See the video on penetration on the WoT site.

Good luck with it.

Thanks chaps.I played a few more games now, saved my xp to get a better gun and I have started playing a little more conservatively. Using cover to try and ambush the enemy as they target more open vehicles, aiming to hit flanks and rear and then moving off. I still only manage a kill or two in most games, but I have scored loads of critical hits (only for a teammate to take the kill - still it is a team game!). Even my crew are improving!

Which server are you on?

Since your new to the game, if you post your WoT name here maybe some kind soul will platoon with you and help you along a bit.

Thanks Spack.

the server is W.o.T (apparently - at least that's what it says at the top of the screen), and my user name is Berger15 - a pattern emerges with that one - every username I can get is berger15!

My little LeichTraktor is serving me well now!

I've got an IS3 and a T44 and I'm lucky if I get 2 kills a game (altnough I have just got 6 in 1 game with my Cromwell!), i wouldn't worry about it too much. I'd be happy to platoon with you unfortunately I go back to work in Afghanistan tomorrow so no WoT for me for 3 months! :(

They're all WoT for the server - but players are split by region. Which site did you sign up on? EU (worldoftanks.eu, default for European players), NA (worldoftanks.com, North America), RU (worldoftanks.ru, Russia), or SEA (don't know the domain, but it's the South East Asia server).

Luckily by trial and error I found you on the EU server - there's no berger15 registered on the other 3 servers so it was easy to determine that it must be you on the EU one :)

For a new player you seem to doing well, at least according to the "efficiency stats" calculator - you're at 1035, which is in the Average section (900-1200 is classed as average). As a new player I was down around 600 for a long long time, it's taken me months to work up to 1006! The stat is very simplistic though, puts a lot of weight on capture and defence which I tend to miss out on as I'm almost always in the middle of the field (it's my excuse and I'm sticking to it :D)

If you want you can use a signature from here on AoS, it's a variation of the one used on 1stcav.net (who are using the latest one from the author which is using some of the code from my version), eg.

Thanks Spack. I would never have found all that - seems like a lot of effort! I have racked up a few defense pionts by staying back when everyone fecks off after the target! Seems like I'm playing the "camper" role, but since the game relies on protecting your base whilst capturing theirs, I feel it's entirely justified! My accuracy needs a bit of work, but my guin is really only any good at short range - and I do take a lot of pot-shots!

You'll find your accuracy goes up with higher tier tanks. Also it'll go up as your crew get more XP.

I tend to spend silver on training at least the gunner and commander to 75% on a new tank, this helps spotting and shooting initially and they get to 100% quicker which helps with adding perks - I tend to use Mentor on the commander initially as that boosts the rest of the crew by 10%. I also try to keep crews once they hit 100%, moving them to new tanks as I sell the one they were in and move up a tier. My current Panther crew have been with me since I think the VK3601, through the Tiger, Tiger 2, and E75.

On guns watch for stats and don't assume the highest tier/one furthest along the tech tree is the best. I tend to look for penetration first, as some of the high damage guns are howitzers with low penetration which makes them ideal at close range against small tanks, but a waste of time against bigger targets. Firing speed can also be a factor - a high damage slow gun can be worse than a rapid firing one with lower damage if the rapid one can deal out more damage per minute, for instance. As an example, on the Panther I've gone with the 75mm L/100 rather than the 88mm gun because the penetration is higher even though the damage is lower, and it's more accurate at long range.

Hey Spack. I have yet to retrain my crew, as 1) they have not hit 100% yet, and 2) I still like my little leichtraktor.
I have used a lot of rapid firing guns, just because of the "damage per minute" factor. As you say though, they tend to be a little less accurate at range, so I'm trying to find a balance, which is fun. I have a couple of tier 2 tanks (1 each for the Brits and Germans) as I have already looked ahead to see the tanks I want! I'm a sucker for a Tiger 2!

All in all, I'm really enjoying WoT! So much so, I have not played Football Manager anywhere near as much!
