Signature Generator - Development Q&A

Re: Signature Generator - Development Q&A

System only allows 1 image per player ID and size combination, due to abuse from some players who had hundreds of different option combinations each of which generated it's own image file. The current method of using the first parameter set in an image request received after the existing image has expired is temporary, longer term the generator interface will be overhauled and will store the settings per player so only the ID and size will be required in the URL rather than all settings.

Okay Spack, so all the greek aside, is this something any poster has control over? Or are the signature images being generated by something else?

The images are generated automatically from the parameters in the image URLs. The problem is that some people had different parameters in different forums, and in the worst cases had a different signature on each of up to 200 forums!!! Anyone using the signatures can help by making sure they use the same image URL wherever they display the signature image, although with the changes I've made tonight I've already mitigated the problem of storing lots of different images for the same player - what they may now find is that where they previously might have had different images on different sites (such as stats on one image, no stats on another, different backgrounds, etc) they will now have only a single image across all sites they used the signatures on, and that image might not have the options they wanted due to one or more of the image URLs having different options than they expected. What they'd need to do is change the signature in all of the other places where they display it so they all have the same parameter set.

Longer term the settings for each player will be stored in a file on the server here at AoS rather than being passed in the URL, and old style URLs will simply ignore all the options and use the settings file that will be created in the web form interface. I'll post up details when that's done, although it may take a few months.

Thanks! Now I understand it!
As for me, I only had the one signature here and actually haven't even been on WOT in months. For that reason, I took the WOT signature out entirely.

I can see how it would eventually overload the server. I would imagine that no one realized that all their signatures were being stored on the one server.
