Signatures disabled for non-AoS members

Signatures disabled for non-AoS members

Postby Spack » Sun Nov 03, 2013 6:24 pm

Due to the massive number of requests for signature images from people who haven't even bothered asking permission to use them I've disabled signature images except for players who are in my approved list. If your signature image is resulting in a 404 page you can request that I add your player details to the approved list - however, I will only do this for AoS forum members who have been around for a while; if you sign up just to request a signature image you will be turned down.

UPDATE: replaced the 404 response with a simple black signature image with "www.AgeofStrife.com" printed on it. Might as well use the freeloaders for some free advertising :)

UPDATE: I may re-enable signatures for non-members as I've added caching headers to the images in order to reduce the amount of work the generating page does - instead of loading up the image every time it's requested and then sending it out if the request header If-Modified-Since matches the image file time it will send a 304 response instead. This should significantly reduce the overhead of serving the images. If I do enable it then I'll add AoS watermarks to the image which will overlay part of the signature, except for those players who I've added to the approved list.

Sounds reasonable, why should we have people using our toys without being members of our community.

Jlong05 You don't get a pic ;) Maybe you should though... I mean 1033 posts is huge!

Spack maybe you could grant photos to those who have a high post count? It's like a reward then for participating.

At the moment I'll be granting them on a request basis, jlong for some reason wasn't on the list I was already pulling data for on a daily basis but has been added now :)

Yay 1 post!

I plead guilty of haxing a sig from a friend. I liked the way it was laid out and the information provided is far better than any other sig out there, including noobmeter, wotstats, and wotlabs.

When I saw this www.ageofstrife.com/wot/sig/WoT403.png I knew the gig was up.

Anyway, I really appreciated the sig, and it was the sig that lead me here to Age of Strife. I do Warhammer Fantasy gaming along with World of Tanks and this forum is very appealing to me, so I think I will stick around! :)

Hi vanionbb, welcome to the site.

As you can see from the first post here I'm mulling over allowing the signature again for non-forum users again, but it might take a few days for me to be happy with the changes I'm making to reduce the overhead on the server. I've had to disable them because as soon as I moved site the memory overhead shot up due to all the sig requests coming in - currently around 1500 people appear to have latched on to my version of it and it was battering the server quite heavily, and having just moved from a 32-bit to a 64-bit version of nix the memory footprint of Apache has gone up quite a bit.

If I do turn it back on I'll post an update here.

TW, are you gaming on the EU servers then or the US servers?

Cool, I will keep up with the status. I have removed the offending sig from my profile. I look forward to putting it back when available :)
