WoT Signatures Open to Public Access

WoT Signatures Open to Public Access

Postby Spack » Sun Nov 10, 2013 2:27 pm

As posted earlier in the week the signature generator was disabled due to the large number of requests causing issues on the new server, and access was restricted temporarily to non-AoS forum members while the code was rewritten to reduce the impact it would have on the site. As part of this rewrite the data parsing was also upgraded to use the latest WoT API. Until I can fully evaluate the impact of the generator being reopened to the public the frequency of updates for non-forum users is now set to 7 days - if I can determine that reducing this will not cause problems for the rest of the server then it may be reduced in the future.

Anyone who is not a member of the Age of Strife forums is free to use the generator, with a few conditions. An overview of these is listed on the generator form page. Any player found to abuse the system will be banned without prior notice, and their signature replaced with a notice that they have been banned. Any player found abusing AoS forums members, including staff, will likewise have their signature banned, and at the discretion of the forum moderators may have their details posted in a public "Hall of Shame" ...

Access the signature generator here: http://www.ageofstrife.com/wot/

The signature generator has been open to the public for almost 24 hours and so far seems to be working ok. Around 6000 requests have been received in total, with a data total of 250MB, which suggests around 7-8GB per month is required to handle the current traffic and is well within the limits imposed on the server. Monitoring will continue over the next day or so, and if the traffic rates stay similar then the 7 day update frequency for non-AoS members will be reduced to 3 days, and the impact monitored over another week or so.

Thank you! It works great, I love the interface and the background pictures and how it can be customized, very nice work! I did try to put my clan symbol next to my name and that did not work, but I am on the NA server, so our clan icons may not be available.

One thing I noticed is the HTML quotes may be spaced incorrectly:

<a href="http://worldoftanks.com/community/accounts/1001339706/"><img src='http://www.ageofstrife.com/wot/sig@1001339706@com@4@1@1111111111111111@111111111111111@011113010@us@0.png' alt='' border=0></a>

I fixed it by replacing the single quote with a double quote around the signature, and removing the two ticks between alt= and border. I am no programmer though, just a born troubleshooter :)

<a href="http://worldoftanks.com/community/accounts/1001339706/"><img src="http://www.ageofstrife.com/wot/sig@1001339706@com@4@1@1111111111111111@111111111111111@011113010@us@0.png" alt=border=0></a>

Thanks again!

Clan icons don't work yet, it's on the list of things to fix. Should be able to get that sorted out tonight.

Single quotes are valid in HTML for attributes, but I've replaced them with double quotes as this is much more common. Your change to "alt=border=0" is not valid HTML - alt and border are both attributes, alt being the alternative text to show when the image is not displayed, for instance in a text only browser, and border being the non-CSS way to define the size of the border. So

alt='' border=0
alt="" border=0
alt="" border="0"

are all valid, and in each case represent a blank replacement string for the image, and turning off the border. Your change would cause problems with a fully HTML compliant browser, but most common browsers will ignore unexpected attributes so it would look like it was working even through it was invalid. A quick test with a W3C HTML validator would have raised an error though.

UPDATE: Had a few spare mins, clan icons are now working.

Is that clan icons just for the eu server?

Or do I need to activate something to have it show up in my signature? I still don't see my clan icon.

It's clan icons for all servers. You do need to add the option though to turn it on, as there are 4 different options. Tell me which one you want and I'll add it for you - you get a choice of the icon small to the right of your name, or large or medium at the right side. I've added the small one next to your name for now :)

Thanks Spack, I think small to the right of my name would work best.

Hi.
As I'm a member of the forum would it be possible to have full access to the signature generator.
It keeps showing some sort of ads at the moment.
Thank you!
I also was a member 6 months ago and seems strange that my account was deleted without notice.

edit1 - can't select a signature in control panel

I'm only giving full access to members of this forum who have contributed over a long term, and who post regularly, or who are moderators or admins. No accounts have been deleted on this forum unless the account was used to spam off topic advertising or abusive posts. Signatures are initially disabled for all users due to them often being used by spammers; once a few posts have been approved (as new accounts also require posts to be moderated, again to avoid spammers) then the option for a signature on this forum will be available.

I can't find any record in the logs of your email address having been previously registered, if you can PM me your previous username I can investigate further. Ideally I'll need a copy of the signup email you would have received too, as the headers will make it easier to track down the appropriate logs.

So your signature will remain as it is for the time being, until such time as it has been determined that you are a valuable contributing member of the forum, or until such time as other options for upgrading the signature are made available.

Thank you for the quick reply.
Couldn't have known all that information.

I can't get it to work. Every time I put my id in it says player not found.
"The guns have stopped because we are at last about to attack. Even our generals aren't mad enough to shell their own men, they think its far more sporting to let the Germans do it!"
