First Tourney

First Tourney

Postby _stu_ » Fri Aug 15, 2014 10:37 pm

Me, Lis and Dave (Lis' younger brother) are all off to our first tournament tomorrow (2 Rebel and one Imperial List) down the road at GoW. Looking forward to it as it's also my first foray into competitive gaming. Will pop a brief report up afterwards ;)

Sorry Guys

Had a busy few days after the tourney (trying to get the last of the baby stuff organised now Lis has started her Maternity leave), and have only just got internet back after it dropping on Thursday (someone put a spade through a cable at the exchange!).

The tourney went pretty well. Lis, Dave (her brother) and me rocked up as complete competitive noobs and didn't really know what to expect. Lists we took were:

Stu - 3*Dagger Sqd B Wings with Advanced Sensors, 2*Bandit Sqd Z-95s (all PS2, so concentrated movement / shooting and no chance of bumping each other - in theory!)

Lis - Chewbacca in the Falcon, with C3PO and Gunner, 2*Rookie X Wings

Dave - 2*Firespray (Krassis and Bounty Hunter?), Gunner and Bombs I think, and an Academy Pilot (aka Steve)

Cant really comment on Lis and Dave's games, will ask them to tag some comments in here....

My first game was against another tournament newcomer (Dean I think?) - who was fielding an Imperial Elite List (Interceptors and a couple of ties). I think we were both finding our feet and played fairly cautiously although it was a really fun game. I lost a Z-95 fairly early on which I didn't mind as the idea was to fly them off as outriders / flankers whilst the B Wings trundled up the map. The plan played out pretty well, as the B Wings soaked up a fair amount of fire whilst whittling down the Ties. I couldn't quite mop up the stragglers in time, so the game ended up with a modified win for me.

The pairing gods had a sense of humour though as round 2 saw me play Dave (brother in law - won his first game) on table 2, whilst Lis (also one her first game) played Terry on table 1. Dave and I had played our lists off against each other a couple of times before the event to tweak them, and he'd always came out better off. We knew it was gonna be a close game, and it was, until Dave ever so slightly misjudged a move and took a Firespray out of bounds. The real kicker was that it was the least damaged of the two, as I'd focused fire early on the other one. Dave to his credit still put up a really good fight, but I managed to stave off his comeback and wipe the remainder of his forces without any loss, so this one ended up a win for me. As Lis was playing next to us on table one, we were able to keep an eye on her game against Terry (Han, Garvin and Biggs) - who we discovered is ranked at 6th in the UK. From what I saw it was a fairly close game, although Terry came out on top with a full win (Lis taking 51 points from him though).

The third game had me move up to table one to play Terry. His tactics stayed the same as his game against Lis (and I'm guessing throughout the event), keeping his three ships in close formation using Biggs as a damage-soak for Han. The Han/Biggs combination was difficult to deal with. By the time I killed Biggs, I'd exhausted the shields on my B Wings and the Z-95s had crumpled at the first sign of combat. I think this is where the low agility of the Bs really showed itself. Towards the end of the game, crits were starting to build up and limiting my options. It was only a matter of time before Terry wiped me, although on the plus side, only the Falcon was left (And I think that was down to only a few hull points). It was another close game, but ended in a win for Terry - I also took 51 points from him.

My final game was played vs Sean on table four. Sean was flying Whisper, a Defender and a Tie Fighter. It's the first time I've played a Phantom (learn much you will) - trying to predict where it will be is nigh on impossible (having a low PS build didnt help). Thankfully, I managed to harass it enough to keep it away from my B Wings. This game is a bit of a blur - B Wings with Advanced Sensors in an asteroid field, and the now-you-see-me Phantom movement dial had both me and Sean scratching our heads in the planning/orders phase (and again when it came round to revealing dials), but I think we both learned a lot from the game (and had a really good laugh at the same time). Looking at the results, I definitely took one, maybe two ships from Sean before the end of the game (we played out to time), but he took more from me.

Overall, we placed 5th (me), 10th (Lis) and 11th(Dave). It was a great day, and its a great experience to play games with a bunch of like minded players. There was no 'that-guy' who had to win at all costs and everyone we played / talked to was happy to share experience, tactics and critique lists. We'll be going back to the next one that's for sure.

Finished reading, you have.

Very nice! Well done on the wins, and no one likes the Han/biggs combo, nor phantoms!

As long as you have fun, that's all you can ask. And I've never met that guy playing x wing either.

And good luck with the nipper to be.

Cheers bud

It feels like it's been a much easier entry in to the competitive scene than 40k. It's funny, but quite a few of the guys playing there felt the same way. NOt sure how much of it is to do with the fairly low buy-in to put together a decent tourney list.

Well said Stu, mind you it helps that all the playser up at Games of War are good fun and are not of the we must win at all costs even by bending the rules to suit fraternity. I am hoping to venture up there for the next X-Wing tournie :D
