So.... X-Wing.....

So.... X-Wing.....

Postby _stu_ » Sun May 18, 2014 11:51 pm

So.... First post in a new section :)

Been playing a fair bit of this recently, with all five of our group picking it up and really enjoying it. I think as a group now we're all past the blind-list-building phase and we're starting to discuss and develop builds and tactics together pre and post game. Its a great game that sucks you in with the simplicity, but the more you play, the more depth you find ;)

Here's a pic of my (well Lis' and mine) fleets:

And a clusterfunk that happened in a game this afternoon (my bro in law was trying out Y's for the first time, and I was experimenting with the Lambda)

How are other people finding it?

Rough points at the mo for each fleet is between 400-450 points depending on pilots and upgrades taken. We haven't played a game that big yet, but we played a 200 point (per side) game last night in a couple of hours at 'social' pace. We could probably do the full 400 points in 3-4 hours depending on how focused we were. 100 point games, which are the norm for pickup or tourneys last between 30 minutes and 90 minutes in our casual setting. Tourney games generally have a 60 minute time limit on them.

Depending on my brothers shifts this week, we may get a 2v2 400 point per side game in using everything. Will let you know how we get on.

Board Size is normally 3 foot square for 100 point games. We generally play on a 4*4 as it gives more space for manoeuvring. Anything above 100 points we play between 5*4 and 6*4

I found that having a time limit and a standard board (3x3) makes for better games.

The time limit cranks up the pressure & stops stupid builds like Luke & Biggs games lasting forever.

The standard board means that you're in the action all the time & running away is far harder to achieve.

Depends.

Do you want to play goodies or baddies? Or are you providing both sides?

In terms of good/bad ships:
Imperial:
Tie - good
Interceptor/ aces - good/good
Advanced - ok (except Vader who's good)
Bombers - ok, but situational
Firespray - I think bad, others think ok - works best in 2s or 3s (I'd skip it for now)
Lamda - good

Rebel:
X Wing - good
A Wing/ aces - ok/good
B Wing/aces - good/good
Y Wing - good
HWK - good
Falcon - very good, but isn't a great tool to learn with as it's a crutch (that I'm trying to get rid of)

I'm, not interested in the huge ships I'm afraid, so I can't pass any judgement.

I'd stick to small ships if I were you & take what you like from the films. Go on FFG's forums, they are pretty good.

Just been looking at the new big X-wing ships and debating whether to buy one of each or not.

Stu I notice you have the rebel transport, is it worth having?

@Tamaul - We haven't played a game using the transport as a ship yet, but the rules and scenarios look fun to play. It is a very nice piece of scenery though :) Will update the thread once we've played a game or two with it.

@Jay - Id have to agree with the advice I saw on the FFG forums about expanding your collection. Start with the ships you like, and maybe buy one of each. For me that was A and B wings for Rebels, and Interceptors / Advanced for Imperial. The X and Tie expansions are also good for getting the extra pilot cards if you're looking to play tourneys (where you have to own a proper copy of every card you use), but in social play we were happy enough to use print outs of lists from the online squad builders (voidstates xwing builder http://xwing-builder.co.uk/ is one of the best weve found). Doing it this way lets you try out cards and ships (if you dont mind proxying) without the outlay, which is nice. The Falcon and Slave 1 are also nice ships to have. As Ljundhammer says, the falcon can be a crutch ship but it's also one of the 'classic' star wars ships. I'd say if you are considering the Falcon, play a good few games before you use it. It's ability to soak up fire combined with the 360 degree arc of turret make feel like a win-button early on in learning the game, but it's a difficult ship to let go of if you get used to it :/

@Ljundhammer - Completely agree with you re the time limit and standard board size. When we first started playing we used a 2*2 starfield to get the basics down before moving to 3*3 and bigger. We do play a mix of board sizes, but with the way we're playing at the minute, the larger space makes it easier to accommodate things like 2v1 and 2v2 and people dropping in and out of game if needs be.

I recently played a 100pt per side tournament at Games of War, the time limit was 75 mins per game and the games all flowed easily. I made my fleet out of what models I had, Millenium Falcon (Han Solo pilot and Millenium Name), a standard red squadron X-wing aand a Y-wing (can't remember name of pilot) Game 1 I got creamed, spent too much effort trying to kill the Lamda, the next 3 games I won (Luck  ) I find the game plays really well and I am looking forward to expanding my fleet. :D

Best way to start is 2 starter sets - it's the cheapest way to get 3 more fighters and gets you the extra dice and a second set of templates.

From there, add what you like the look of.

For list building, I have seen a very successful 4 Interceptor list.

Played a game featuring the Transport. Adds quite a bit to the game, in terms of boosting/limiting ships within range.

There's a lot of truth in the 2 starter sets route, and it adds soooo much more than just the extra ships. 4 Interceptors is something that I'm playing around with at the mo, and I like the idea of a shuttle handing them target locks before they go off hunting :)

We're playing a 300pt + transport scenario game tomorrow so will let folks know our thoughts on it. Cant help but look at this list and think I'm going to be massively outnumbered though.

I wouldn't worry about numbers-the game is fairly well balanced.

I played in a 500pt 4 player game. Imperials had lots of TIEs, but the Rebels dealt with them in a war of attrition (2 Falcons helped, plus my bombers being unable to hit or evade!).

Yeah, I think the difference between the two lists I'm looking at is only two ships. I know it normally pans out fairly evenly, but its the sight of the swarm versus the small posse of elite rebels. Adds to the flavour tbh.

The two lists are fairly similar..... I'll pop them up in a separate thread, along with the transport setup I'm running ;)
