X Wing wave 4

X Wing wave 4

Postby Ljundhammer » Thu Jul 03, 2014 1:46 pm

Assuming we've all got our grubby little mitts on these then?

I've managed to play with them all & my thoughts are:

E Wing -
Image
it's a super X wing for a super points cost. You can soup them up, but why bother. I can't see the need for the non-named ones, an X wing is almost as good for a lot fewer points, but the special rules of the special pilots are pretty special.

Z-95 -
Image
since getting couple of these I can't build a rebel list without them. Mini X wings and they look a lot less goofy than the E Wing.

Tie Defender -
Image
hits hard, hits fast. Tried all the pilots & a load of upgrades. I keep coming back to the PS1 naked varient. It blocks, it flanks, it survives, it kills. Like it a lot, but quite difficult to start with as turning it is hard work. I've managed to get behind some x wings on a couple of occasions and they have a bugger of a time shaking this guy off them.

Tie phantom -
Image
everyone is raving about this little sod. I like it, but not too much. You need to be flying well to keep it going. I think it's the most dice-dependant ship in the game, roll a bad round of greens & that's a big points investment looking very shakey. That said, if you fly well then it is a very good late game ship - early doors it's hard to keep it out of everyone's way.

My thoughts on the game post wave 4:

We now have 2 distinct methodologies of building a list. Either:
- small squads of super big guys PS 7 at the lowest; or
- big squads of super little guys, swarms of lower PS

Anything at around PS5-7 is looking in a bad way from my games. You pay points for the PS, but shoot after the big guys; or you pay points for the PS, to be massively outnumbered & outshot by the swarms. I'm finding myself reaching for VI as my first upgrade for anyone of that range otherwise it's nigh-on pointless bringing them. The high end non-named pilots (normally 4's) are still ok, they don't cost much more, but still beat the crappy pilots at 1 & 2.

Anyway, a few of the more successful wave 4 builds I've used:

Rebel:
Etahn swarm:
Etahn A'baht (Ewing, support pilot) - veteran instincts
Rookie X wing
Rookie X wing
Bandit Z-95
Bandit Z-95

Luke & chums:
Luke skwalker (X wing)
Red squadron X wing
Red squadron X wing
Tala squadron Z-95
Tala squadron Z-95

Empire:
Echo & the bunnymen
Echo (Tie phantom) - outmaneuvre, advanced sensors, advanced cloaking device
Academy tie fighter
Academy tie fighter
Academy tie fighter
Academy tie fighter
Academy tie fighter

Stick with me:
Delta squadron (Tie defender)
Delta squadron (Tie defender)
Scimitar tie bomber - concussion missiles
Scimitar tie bomber - concussion missiles

How is Wave 4 going down with you?

Great write-up.

I am still simply in the collecting mode. I have only got a couple games with my son. His attention span for these sort of things is pretty then. Anyway. I do want to play more. Maybe I will take my stuff for Summer Camp with my high-schoolers to see if anyone might have an interest.

Got a couple of each of the wave 4 ships and am starting to introduce them to the lists we're playing. Your write-up is pretty much bang on. Z95s are a solid feature in my lists at the mo as either a filler, or in pairs to drop off the main fight and run interference :) I'm having a lot of joy with 3*Daggers and 2 Z95s just now.

I've been playing around quite a bit since I wrote the first post...

Z95 are still awesome filler, but I'm finding myself building a lot more lists at PS7+ lately, so they're getting less flight time as I go on.

The Ewing is superb. Corran, VI, engine upgrade, predator will duff up a load of stuff!

The defender needs a heavy laser cannon, otherwise don't bother. Seen it work well with the high ps pilots (in a 2 ship build with a phantom no less) and as the lead of a mini swarm with a low ps pilot.

Echo & whisper are just evil!

I love the phantoms after playing a couple more games with them. We've got a 300pt 2v2 setup in the conservatory at the mo and the flexibility of movement with them is quite the thing. It's one of those games where we keep stopping to discuss options and try things out - so we're using markers to work out all of the 'options' are - definitely worth a try for getting your head around playing with / against one (Lis is using Echo, I'm using Whisper).

The defender is a bit of an odd one - not quite sure where it sits in my squads, as it feels more like a rebel-type ship?

E Wing and Z-95 are both seeing a fair bit of use. Corran for his ability alone can be a corner-stone pilot (especially with a few Zs making use of it (nice way to overpower a falcon?)

Still getting to grips with them in general, but I think they've all added to the game in their own way, and if Im honest - dont think any of them are particulary over/under-powered.

Really looking forward to wave 5 though. My BWings will be getting some fresh toys from Aces, and the new big ships will shake things up a bit....
