Warhammer 40,000 7th edition impressions?

Discussion of anything 40K related

Is 7th any good?

It's really good
It's better than 6th and good
It's worse than 6th but still good
It's functionally identical to 6th and good
It's functionally identical to 6th and bad
It's better than 6th but still bad
It's worse than 6th and bad
It's an abomination, kill it with fire
I dunno, but I like voting in polls

One of GWs big problems is their overheads, those shops aren't cheap. This has been a problem for them in the past as well. Back in the late 80s they expanded a bit too quickly and nearly went under. The shops are a drain on their turnover, hence why some have closed and most others have reduced staff and gone to limited opening hours.

Nige, that's the problem though. They are making the SAME profit and have been for years. For a variety of reasons GW have stagnated in the market place. Maybe if they changed their policy they would grow again, who knows.

Well, the poll results seem to show an amazing antipathy for 40k!

The people who still play regularly seem to like it. Which isn't surprising I suppose, given that people who don't like it were jettisoned during 6th...

So the question is, who IS playing 40k nowadays? If it's not us old warhorses (4 of us exempted) then who? I don't get it - surely each of the people who used to play in 5th were each spending in £200 - £1000 per year braket (I'm assuming, but probably not far off in a guestimate fashion) then who's picking up the slack?

Nige, Gav, without divulging any secrets - have you seen a change in who you're selling to & how much they order at a time?

I'm still playing, but 6th ed. I might really like 7th, but I won't find out until I can obtain the rules at a price to my liking.
I certainly wasn't spending quite the amount of money you've estimated, as I'd already cut down to just updating one army, and every other codex release for the others.
I haven't voted in the poll as I haven't tried 7th so I have no basis to vote. Reading more on warseer, there seems to be more positive reaction.

I spend £2k-£3k per year on wargames, at least over the last 4 years. GW's share has declined substantially over that time, it was less than £300 last year.

I used to drop thousands on GW every year, but it has steadily declined over the last few years, last year I would be lucky if it was over £50. The last thing I bought of GW was the HE digital army book. In fact I think that's the only thing I bought of theirs last year. Most of my recent purchases have been FoW and BA and this year it's going to be all DcZ.

Sounds like a dangerous game to play with your finances. 8O Larger returns per unit, but reducing units built? - in a market as competitive as this, I would believe this leads to financial ruin! (I know - it's tongue in cheek - ish ;) )

Really? Already rumours of another book at the launch of this one!? That would be the final nail in the coffin for me - I may give up 40K for good if they went down that path. I honestly could not financially support all my games - and 40K would be first out

Edit - Four smilies in one post - sorry!

Well I don't think they are replenishing their lost customers LH. We've seen a decline in GW sales a lot. That said we also can sell less GW products too. They keep reducing the offerings to us independents bit by bit.

I can talk about my own purchasing though... up until very recently my spending on the hobby was 100% GW. And now I own a comprehensive American BA army and a massive DzC PHR army too. Now where would that money have gone otherwise... :(

Im not done with GW though. Models are great and you can play any sized/themed game you want now. Fluff is great and also lends itself to the themed style. So im sure we can still play some really cool looking themed games of 40K. But I don't have to buy a lot or anything to be fair as I have such a lot already. Some stuff not even made or played before too. So no need to buy any more GW for now.

Are 6th ed rulebooks worth anything on ebay? or can anyone thing of a cool use for it? :)

As useful as they are for wobbly model syndrome, they are even better for wobbly table syndrome.

Thanks guys, and especially Nige for that little insight.

My spending has gone from c£500pa about 5 years ago. It declined at the back end of 5th to less than £100pa as I didn't need to change my armies (I expect GW saw a bit of this too - hence the shorter cycles) but bought a few codexes. The last time I spent any money on GW was for the 6th ed rule book.

The sad thing is that my brother works for GW, so I can get pretty much anything I want at 50% off - and I still can't justify their prices (although I probably could at a stretch if I liked the game).

I'm spending my money on board games & X Wing now. My gaming group & I are looking for ways of using 40k models now, as I have amassed an embarrasing collection to be just gathering dust until the kids are old enough to play with them.

I have actually drafted a turn sequence out for writing a new ruleset, but it's going to take a while to get a "working model" worth sharing.

This is the thing, I think I could do a rulebook without much hassle. The issue is rules mean nothing without miniatures and to some degree fluff to go with it. So writing a new game is out because it wouldn't have the material support, so it would just become 40k with house rules.

But wouldn't it be a better set of rules if it was made up of suggestions and recommendations from a larger group of play-testers?

It seems GW's "pool of knowledge" are the staff of GW. They seem to have their own set of "house rules" that never make it into any rulebook. This leads to confusion in the rule-set, and GW continued response is the cop out of "just dice it off".

For the amount of money I'm spending on a rule book, I'd like to know that the answer to "Can I do 'X'?" is either yes or no, not, dice it off. I don't think it would take too much for them (GW) to solicit input from other players, and respond to that input. Just my 2 cents worth.

Well, if you write a really good ruleset, you get a little support and go for broke on Kickstarter! :) The fluff can follow. Let's face it, GW have ripped off other SF writers, who in turn had ripped off other SF writers. You ripping off GW - albeit a little less conspicuously to avoid legal action - would just be part of the circle of fluff evolution!

I've finally played my first few games of this edition. It went well and by that I mean I won all of them :D As a Tau player we really can do nothing at all about the psychic phase. I'd misread the deny the witch rules which made it go from difficult to almost impossible to achieve. But that didn't make the game over powered in the enemies favour.

My gut reaction was OMG why have they done this! After seeing the outcome of the powers that went off though I wasn't feeling to bad about it all. I kept out of range for the most part and when I was hit the damage was no more than an average shooting attack.

Eldar and Tyranids have some nasty powers and access to lot of psykers, but I think facing deamons will be the biggest test of the Psychic phase.

Missions are a lot of fun but at 500 points you are almost powerless to actively achieve most of them and we had to rely on luck more than tactics for most of them. Objective cards are an absolute must buy as rolling from the book is a pain in butt and makes for a lot of book keeping.

In my fist game vs Eldar all the cards came up in my opponants favour for the first few turns and I just had to hope that my luck would change. It did eventually and was helped by maxing out the d3 rolls every time I got to make one.... All hail the dice GODZ! In the end it was very very close on VP's even though I'd managed to kill them to a man.

The second game went much more in my favour but only due to the weakness of the hive-mind. I slaughtered the winged hive tyrant (helped by skyfiring Broadsides) and a half of my opponents army ran off the board instantly (30 gaunts), leaving one very battle worn squad left that had managed to pass moral twice. It was though a losing battle and we called it there as time was getting on.

The system does seem very polished in general and the flow is nice. I can't wait to play some larger games and include more unit types to fully test out the other aspects of the game.
