What is "sideboarding" ? - 6.5/7th edition

Postby Jay » Thu May 01, 2014 4:59 pm

This cropped up on a couple rumour sites, to be honest I don't know what sideboarding means and also what is percentage based selection, allegedly this is being used to replace FoC and address the crazy allies lists.

Well percentage based selection is the system used by Warhammer. It was also used in 40K back in the good old days of 2nd ed before 3rd ed brought in all that new fangled FoC stuff. Essentially you get a percentage of your total army points to spend on the various components of your army. At a guess, going off the way Warhammer works, I would say that you will have to spend a minimum of 25% on Troops with between 25% and 50% to spend on the other components such as HQ. Warhammer works like this:

Upto 25% on Lords
Upto 25% on Heroes
At least 25% on Core
Upto 50% on Special
Upto 25% on Rare.

Hope this helps.

As to sideboarding it looks as though you only pick 75% of your army in advance, for instance in a 1500 pt game you would have pre selected 1125 pts worth of stuff. Then when you see what your opponent has brought you can then pick the remaining 25% of your army to help you tailor your army to fight him. Tbh I see this as more aimed towards the tournament scene, can't see it being used much in friendly club games as everybody largely knows everybody elses army. I might be wrong about this though so if anyone else has an idea feel free to correct me.

Yeah the system arises from Card games like Magic.
It works there for tournament games because you have a three game match.
60 card decks with a 15 card sideboard. After the first game you can switch cards between the two to alter your deck to better suit your opponents. Of course they are doing the Same thing.
It looks like an attempt to make things more tactically flexible.
Pick an all purpose force that might have limited anti-tank then, if your opponent turns up with 3 Land Raiders in their core you can add some more Multimelta.

Maybe so that they can justify selling more Big Nasty units (all the new big plastic kits from Riptides through Wraithknights to Imperial Knights)
It counters the main anti-argument. "If i've built an all-comers list how am I supposed to beat 3 Knights - it's just not fun more than once."
They can sell it as your Sideboard is the opportunity to face these forces reguarly and add your counter-reaction.
Sells more stuff. Build the army you want, then build all the potential add ons to make it competitive.
The real trick for Tourney players will be fill out your core with the expected minimums. (Objective holders, no-brainer units ect) and leaving your main offence to the Sideboard so people cannot see it and add natural counters.
People with large collections also win out because at an event you can't get your whole force scouted in a previous round by someone who finishes early. Just pull something different from your case.
When you wish upon a star, your dreams can come true.
Unless it's a meteorite falling to Earth, which will destroy all life, then you're pretty much hosed no matter what you wish for.
Unless it's death by meteorite.

That sounds like its been nicked from MTG. They have a sideboard in tournaments. You'd have your gaming deck, and then a set number of cards set to the sideboard. So if you found that you have a particular weakness against your opponents deck, you could swap out cards.

If it's a similar concept, then I'd agree with MarkB. It sounds like you only submit a partial list, and then put in different units depending on what force you face.

EDIT: Piped to the post, lol

you use to do percentage thing in the old days of 2nd ed............... i think i prefer the current system :)
don't see them moving back to the percentage thing as lots of codex refer to the current system but anything can happen.

If they are doing the sideboard thing then every Codex will be out of date anyway. I can't believe they are doing this with the amount of Codexes they have released in the last 2 years but lets be honest, it's not a massive change. I haven't bought a "real" Codex since I got my iPad so they will probably get updated automatically, its just a pain for anyone who has a book Codex.

As to the percentage thing, I kind of like the idea. I never really liked the FoC, especially back in the days of 3rd and 4th due to mini-maxing. I got sick of seeing mini-maxed Iron Warriors and Eldar armies at GTs. At least 5th tried to address this by making only Troops scoring units but 6th has, depending on mission, got rid of this again.

Wow im liking this a lot...

This is exactly how I have been trying to get my friends to play our games. Full exposure.

I wanted players to know what army they were fighting and even what the table was gonna look like also, so armies could be tailored to both. Even the mission sometimes. This allows you to build a force for the job at hand, like any general would, or a least create a force from his disposable assets to best meet the task at hand.

Sounds very interesting so far.
