Re: Football- a goal a minute (/current news chatter)

Postby ruffian4 » Wed Jul 10, 2013 10:55 am

Whilst at school ...

We played in a 5 a side tourny with no substitutes.
At one point, the other lot had a corner, two of our lot went up for a header and headed each other, one of which rebounded and hit the goalkeeper who hit his head on the post.
All three were knocked out.

Insane ref made me and one guy play on. We lost.

Whilst an adult ...

I managed to score an overhead bicycle kick own goal.
Both teams and some onlookers stood about in slack-jawed shock for about 10 seconds.

Was involved in one hilarious rugby incidednt too.
Playing for the school, I was tight head prop in a scrum next to our hooker (at this point, I think Timewizard just died of double entendreitis). All hookers are dirty buggars (kaboom!) and he was a nightmare who used to kick the crap out of the other front row.

Their hooker got fed up and kicked back. After a while, both front rows were just kicking each other to bits until the scrum collapsed. This happened 3 times as I recall.

TBH as it happened in Nigeria I was pleasantly surprised it wasn't like the incident in Brazil over the weekend (ref sent of player, ref and player get into fisticuffs as player won't leave field, ref stabs player to death, fans kick ref to death then dismember the body).

I've scored a headed own goal from outside the box and two own goals from miscued clearances on the edge of my own box before.

When I was playing U17s someone put a fairly hefty and slightly dangerour tackle in on our 6' 4" centre back..... his 5' mother then came charging onto the pitch to have a go at the other player.....

Also re the OP, note that most of the goals were scored in the second half so the game with 70+ goals must have involved some fast dude sprinting from the centre circle every time or some accurate guy just Beckhaming the kick off on a continuous basis (in reality I doubt it involved any of the above ;) )

Sounds like last time that Derby were in the Premiership...

And yes, that Brazilian thing was a little unsavoury.

That San Francisco air crash looks a bit odd. People falling out & surviving (whether they see that as a good thing will be seen - I don't know how badly injured they are). At least the North Koreans haven't been blamed yet.

And, Egypt, what's all that about then? It's all a bit too complicated for my little brain to be able to form a concise Daily Mail like opinion - I've gone all Guarduan in my dotage.

Is that all /current news chatter? You kids and your Internet ways are too confusing, life was simpler when I could be amused by a cat playing a piano.

Egypt is basically a case of the people realising they replaced a d-bag with another d-bag who wanted more power than your standard democratically elected leader, and possibly had some non-secular law-making on the go (for which they deserve a facepalm because it was all bloody obvious), and the army wanting to restore stability and slip in a bit of stamping on the non-secular behaviour out of sight of the ref so-to-speak.

So we can look forward to many rounds of large parts of the people and the army resisting any attempts to move towards a religious state until they get some popular d-bag like Erodgan (sp?) in Turkey who starts making small and irritating changes on the back of his personal popularity.

Ruffian, you never cease to amaze me mate! I'll have to tell my friends at darts that my English mate "was tight head prop in a scrum next to [a] hooker"!
I'll let you know what they say.

And as to the Egypt events, one can hope that finally somewhere in the arab world, people are getting fed up with the muslim brotherhood.

Has there ever been a dafter game?

They all run away if it rains. This is Britain, you loonies, it rains a lot.

If a game is interrupted (it will be, even if just because somebody has to go home), there is an arcane method of ancient mathematical formulae that determines who has won, the Duckworth Lewis method. I don't understand it. Einstein didn't and neither did Laurel and Hardy. 2 hours of calculations result in "its a draw."

Dam them, I think they should be chastised and it should be replaced with the Barnes Wallace method.

As far as Egypt is concerned (how did that get brought up???), they got rid of one dollop of gods, they should do the same now, so should everybody else and realise that democracy is a load of crap, but its the best we have.

Oh, I'd forgotten about Turkey. They were doing so well before :(

On the whole Arab spring, and I suppose Arab late summer/autumn that's going on at the moment - including Tunisia, Libya, Egypt x 2, Turkey, and Syria (and soon to be Jordan et al no doubt) - it's all got a bit "Moral Maze". I think I know what I would want to happen. But I don't know if it's what they would want to happen. I don't know if killing people in a foreign state for a democracy they want is morally right, never mind killing people for a democracy they don't want. And when they do get a democracy they may or may not want, they go and elect a complete arse (not that the west are exempt from that - see the war criminals T Bliar/GW Bush), what should my moral position be then? That's ignoring the apparent proxy war that's building in Syria between The West/Russia, which is part of the Sunni/Shia/Secular war that's part of the Government/Revolutionary war: each of which are fighting each other and themselves in a mess that I can't even begin to understand.

It's all to complicated for my little brain. Why can't soldiers wear uniforms, and one side have the common decency of being "the baddy" so I know what's going on. I'm going to look at kittens instead.

On cricket - I've never understood why it hasn't caught on in the US. Built in advert breaks every 6 balls, built in stops for food, scores that happen almost constantly, stats galore for pretty much everything, and despite all this almost nothing actually happens for 5 days. It's the perfect All American sport.

In fairness, the Duckworth Lewis method doesn't often end in a draw.

Our country is hardly a shining example. Both Blair and Cameron have been dishonest about the extent of their religious beliefs and both have constantly appointed very religious Education Secretaries who are trying their best to empower religious institutions to get their claws into the general education system.

Fortunately the impact of Muslim issues, sex abuse scandals etc has probably made the public more willing to actively reject moves towards religious radicalisation, or at least made it an area that the Government is more reticent to act without mandate on.

I'm also available to rant about right-to-buy, the reasons behind the rise in average public sector pay and MP pay rises amongst other things ;)

Other interesting d-bag moves in public services have been the ridiculous pay offs to BBC senior management, gagging orders in the NHS and ofc the communication tracking scandal.

Can someone pass my a cushion, this soapbox is a little hard ;)

I fully agree with you on Blair & Cameron. The Tories are (for the most part) at least up front that they are bible-bashing loonies... I tend to run on the basis that if Eric Pickles says something I agree with then I change my mind. On that, is it my views changing, or does Bob Crow appear to be talking a lot more sense recently, he used to be my benchmark for the "Pickles test".

I cleansed my need for ranting about religion by going to an Alpha course and realising that I know more about most religions than most people - the religious mind is not open to change, so why bother. Instead I donate to secular charities and causes I agree with, shout at people John Humphreys interviews while I'm in the car, and read a lot of forums (forae?) and blogs.

I think we have strong views about the same thing Bara. Mutual agreement is boring, and unbecoming of a flame war. We must find something we disagree with each other on. What's your take on the pronunciation of "schedule"?

Agreed, they should at least be able to vote about getting killed shouldn't they?
But, that's not proper British/American thinking, so we should probably report for better "education."

That's a bit Mitchell and Webb, isn't it?

(comedians. They are dressed in ss uniforms, while one wonders why they are dressed in black and wear skulls on their hats, which makes him wonder "are we the baddies?").

Bob Crow said one thing in the last 5 years I agree with. I don't remember what it was, I just remember 5 minutes of stunned silence.

On the whole I don't find Pickles too bad when he's talking about things that fall into his area of responsibility, is that sufficient for a flame war? ;)

I'm a member of the British Humanist Association and I did contribute to the "There probably is no god" campaign (which is mildly ironic because it means I just gave money back to my current employers, though the campaign was a little before I joined them).

:eusa_shhh -edule :P

EDIT: can I also mention how the Government is selling off the Royal Mail just after it's got back to being a decent profitable business.........

Don't be silly, public "buisness" can never be profitable, only honest to goodness private enterprise can be seen to do that.
Public sector keeps the toxic stuff, while the goodies get sold to fat bastard for a pittance is the only way to go.

Ooh, I like Mitchell & Webb, and I have an unseemly wanton desire for David Mitchell's wife.

On Bob Crow, it might just be due to the usual "only extreme views make good radio/TV" so I tend to swing more toward the left than the right (so my tailor tells me). Mostly he is a nut job, but I think he does have a point for some of it. He needs elocution lessions though - the "Moi MembAs" schtick is really annoying.

Pickles is an arse of the highest proportions. Wheeled out to deliver frankly awful government decisions in his nice, non-threatening, reasonable sounding voice. Everything he thinks of himself is enshrined the the Tory "Faith, Flag, Family" train of thought that I utterly despise.

And yes, going back to education, as someone who is about to put a couple of kids through school, the fact that I pay for their damned school through my taxes, and that the number 1 (or 2) criteria for getting into my local school is "do you regularly attend church" should it be oversubscribed (which luckly it isn't) is appaling. Sometimes I'm motivated to get into politics. Then I remember I can't really be arsed.

On public businesses - it's very difficult to get them to make money because their strategic direction is governed by politicians, and they only think in 5 year cycles (see endless NHS reforms over the last 15 years). Added to this, the point of a public business is often not to make money, but to employ people, as the marginal losses (including tax income from what they spend) is likely less than them being on the dole. As soon as something is profitable, the Government should flog it, otherwise it'll just get cocked up later, so I agree with the sale of Royal Mail. And I agree with the mutualisation of Post Offices as well.

That said, regulators need to be given some teeth, because the privitised utility companies are currently on a gravy train at our expense - there's a lot to be said, in my opinion, for the privitisation of the business, but the infrastructure itself being kept in the government hands (like the railway was at the beginning).
