well I know people at the our club who have pulled peoples legs over that kind of stuff in a humorous manner, like Gav did with big Pauls assault guns in early war, but I don't think there's anyone who takes it that seriously as to let it effect the 'game' as a game.

A lot that's said in jest isn't really a joke.... I know people take this in good humour most of the time. But as a gamer clubs come and go and you have to think about the wider gaming community. Especially if you're thinking of going at it competitively as official and none official events will have vastly different opinions on the matter.

In all games you have to play to the group but I feel there are much more considerations to made with historical games than fantasy, sci-fi or alternate earth settings. Depictions and re-enactments of real life events (especially ones so close to home) will always bring strong feelings, opinions and baggage to the table that I don't want to get involved with.

Quite some time ago, I played a lot of the Avalon Hill war games (D-Day, Tobruk, Richthofen's War to name a few) with a few friends. We liked playing historic battles. The fun came in seeing if we could avoid the mistakes of past commanders and "change history". I managed to push the allies out of France just by activating the panzers that were kept i reserve on D-Day, among other things. I also won the battle of Gettysburg for the rebels, which would have dramatically altered the history of the US!

I'm still looking for opponents to play FoW against, but what appeals to me is the better set of rules than 40K, and the historical aspect of it. I would rather win an "historic" battle using only available units and weapons than build up a "power" list that never was or could be found in the real engagement.

Just my 2 cents worth.

I seriously wouldn't worry about being historically accurate guys.. Look at every American war movie for the last 70 years.

I understand what you are saying DL and TW, but if the game was being played in an historic only setting then that is fair enough. Players understand that and come to the table over a game to represent that. BA is not that game....

Skywalker shouldn't really be playing BA if he wants a historically correct game, and neither would I if I was of the same opinion. Bolt Action has some restrictions on lists of a certain time frame, from the units that were available at the start and others available at the end of the war, so it offers some historical reference, but in the main, there are lots that aren't represented.

Was it the Sherman tank which out numbered the German tiger something like 8-1. So why can each side only take one per normal reinforced platoon? That is so out of wack its just never gonna be right. The game though makes the Sherman a lot more potent to address this game restriction of 1 tank.

BTW, I also have no issue with anyone wanting to play historical games, and I quite like the idea of trying to rewrite history with that kind of thing too TW, but not with BA, its just a balanced game which I try to win using player skill and list building.

FoW is more in keeping with history.. might be a better option for the historians ;)

I agree, and since I never played BA, it's tough for me to venture an opinion on it.

For absolute historical accuracy, I drag out my copy of Zombicide and have a game with my son! ;)

I like DL have been on the receiving end of the "Wargames Police" even when playing 40K. This happened at one of the Stockton shows a few years ago when this bloke lectured the four of us who were playing about how the Imperial Guard would not sent the Preatorian Guard to war in bright red uniforms as it made them an easy target and how sponsons on the side of a Leman Russ was too small to mount the weapon it was carrying. I am not that much of a stickler about things being 100% accurate I was just using it as an example of how even playing a historic based game power gaming could creep in. As I said before its only a game and it by that definition should be FUN for all who play

Yes but this is my point with BA: I don't think it is possible to build a power list. That is why I asked for someone to post it... It was thought that flamer tanks were the OP unit. I took two and two complimentary flamethrower infantry units in jeeps. While I managed to kill most of Gavs infantry, both flamer tanks ran out of fuel after just one firing!! lol

Gav would have gotten a draw in the end because he would have been able to clear the objective of what few infantry I had left. For OP units, how about a medium howitzer? Gav's hit on of my units and killed all the 8 man to the last man. I find its situation and luck that decides how 'good' a unit is in a particular game.

So for a balanced game, I find it's BA where player skill comes into it the most from my limited gaming experience.

If its a balanced game with no power builds and a game that requires player skill you want the best bet is infinity, which is the game I am most interested in, but as you correctly pointed out picking a good game has a number of factors, one of which is do people in your gaming group play or want to play it.

That is the overriding factor for me when I looked at another game other than 40k.

Most of the guys were playing BA already, and didn't needed to be persuaded into it. I only heard good things from people. They had been saying these things before I even started looking and had been playing for a year almost some of them and stuck with it. These things all influenced my choice.

Other point is the game manufacturer is releasing updates and new models at a pace that I think is affordable and manageable. If anything, the fact our shop doesn't have access directly to the full range is a bit frustrating, but only for me really as I get my discount that way. ;)

FoW seem to release stuff at a really fast pace and to me they seem to be rewriting history. By that I mean, the books I bought originally have now all been super ceded. Does this mean the lists were wring first time round, or were the points cost wrong. Or maybe I can still use them and the other books just offer more lists or other unit options. Whatever is the reason, the books are only one issue. They have also now released the Arab theatre and before that was Vietnam. I didn't buy into them, not many did, so that has now gone south a little for me.

And of course there are other games I could buy into, but I like to play just a few games and buy into them a bit. Not buy a bit of many different games. You don't learn the rules well, you confuse game rules with others and you don't buy a full army to explore the whole game. For that you need a well supported game with model range, comprehensive rules and interesting updates.

Model range and Fluff have a big factor for me as well, so far I have not found anything that ticks as many boxes as 40 k did before the madness happened.

I agree with Banes comments, it was 40K that restarted my interest in wargaming, but when 40K started to go off the rails so to speak I refound my love for things WW2. Too many war movies and playing with action men when I was a kid me thinks

I used to build tank models with firecrackers and cherry bombs built into them so they could be blown up!

I still haven't had a proper game of FoW, looking for an opponent.

You lot are worthy, but just a bit too much of a compute.

I've considered it, thought learning a new language might be a bit of a bother!
