I really enjoy the game's mechanics. A standard game will take about 1 1/2 hours with an average of 8 models per player. The amount of special rules for each model, and the "you activate one model, then I do" mechanic tend to slow the game down a bit as players re-evalute what to do next in response to their opponent's actions. The mechanics of using the deck of cards allows for much more variation in results. Also, each model tends to have a fair bit to quite a lot of character, which I find makes the game much more engaging.

If you want to read through the rules, a simplified version of the rulebook is available for download from the company's website. It just doesn't have the fluff or model stats.

I must admit though, reading the rules for the first time totally boggled my mind!

But once you've read through it a couple of times and especially once you start playing, it all becomes clear and is actually very easy to pick up. I still only play with the starter set, but like the game enough to want to expand

Yeah. Malifaux can be a bit overwhelming when one first gets into it. I highly recommend that one play with just a starter set until they have a grasp of the rules, then expand. I would also recommend that one stay within their faction so that they can figure out more tactics and learn the rules. It also allows a player to try out different combinations in response to different missioins and terrain instead of only being able to choose between different faction crews, which can't typically be intermixed.
