My First FoW Tournament - Corrivalry

Postby DaBoss » Sun Feb 20, 2011 7:42 pm

Well back from the weekend, had a great time and managed to Win 3 times and Lose 2 - not a bad showing for first FoW tournament.

One thing to note: the tables had a lot of scenery on them, I would guess at over 75% covered. Guess thats why so many lists went for Infantry companies.

So breakdown of my games:

Game 1: Roadblock vs British Commandoes (Attacking)
His force contained: 2 x Commando Platoons, 1 x Mortar Platoon, 1 x 6pdrs (4 guns), 1 x Artillery Battery (8 guns), Off-table Naval Support and Typhoons.

WIN to me 4-3: One of my Fallshirmjager Platoons beat up a Commando Platoon on the 5th Turn and he had no one in range to contest.

Game 2: Trench Fight vs Strelkovy Battalon (Defending)
His force contained: 2 x Strelkovy (3 platoons), 1 x Heavy Mortar Platoon, 1 x Scout Platoon, 1 x Anti-Tank Platoon (4 x 45mm), 1 x Flamethrower Platoon (2 Squads) and 1 x IS85 (5) Platoons.

LOSS to me 7-0: Two large Strelkovy deployed in the trenchs with IS85 in ambush. My Panzer Tanks fail to stormtrooper over the Barbed Wire and get shredded by the IS85s. My Jager platoons then slowly cross the Wire and get blasted by Machine-gun fire. I concede the game on turn 4 as I have no offensive troops left.

Game 3: Hasty Assault vs British Airbourne (Attacking)
His force contained: 2 x Airlanding Platoons, 1 Mortar Platoon (3 Sections), 1 Machine-gun Platoon (1 section), 1 x Anti-Tank Platoon (2 sections), 1 x Royal Engineers (3 Squads) + Piat, 1 x Light Artillery Battery (2 sections) and finally a Typhoon air support.

WIN to me 7-0: The centre of the table is covered 80% by a russian village and forest, leaving his artillery no real lines of sight for his observers. I decide to go on the offensive by sending the Jager Platoon across into his side of the table within a wood. Meanwhile he sent his Royal engineers down the other flank towards the objective. The Panzers arrive at the perfect moment and send the Royal Engineers running. It gets to turn 6 and my opponent realises that he is loosing as he has no platoons on my side of the table but to succeed he has to assault through my dug-in Jagers, after 21 dice of defensive fire he has only one stand surviving - I then assault his other Platoon and wipe them out proceeding to follow through and take out his Artillery (Note: earlier he had moved his CiC with attached Piats through the village which I promptly attacked and killed)

Game 4: Encounter vs Udarny Strelkovy Battalon (Attacking)
His force contained: HQ attached Sappers combat attached, 2 x Udarny Strelkovy (3 platoons), Scout Platoon (1 Squad), 1 x Heavy Mortar Platoon (2 Sections), 1 x Flamethrower Platoon (2 squads) combat attached, 1 x Artillery Battalion (2 Gun Sections plus 2 Howitzer Sections), 3 ISU-122 Tanks and 4 SU-76 Tanks.

LOSS for me 6-1: my opponent sent one of his hugh Strelkovy Company down one flank towards his objective - I continually dropped Heavy Mortars on them and when they got within 10" I assaulted them with my Jager Platoon, knocked him down to 5 stands including CiC and Kommissar but I have only 3 stands and my CiC left, he succeeds in assaulting me and wipes me out with his remaining 4 stands. My turn 5 and finally get a reserve, I bring on the Panzer Platoon and roll for scattered reserves but roll a 1 whereas I needed them on the Right Flank!!! Game Over.

Game 5: Free For All vs Guards Armoured Company (Attacking)
His force contaied: 2 x Armoured Platoon (3 Shermans + 1 Firefly), 1 Motor Platoon (3 Squads plus extra teams), 1 Scout Platoon (1 patrol), 1 Anti-Tank (4 M10C 17pdrs), and Field (SP) Battery (2 sextons)

WIN for me 4-3: The table was criss-crossed with Hedges and woods time for my Plan B force - 4 x Panzerfaust Tank Traps and all Jagers carrying Panzerfausts.
The Guards Armoured all mass on one flank while I place a Jager Platoon on each flank. The Guards advance and straight away get hit by Tank Traps, PaK40 guns and the Heavy Mortars; after 3 turns of this he is left with CiC Tank, 1 platoon with 1 Tank, 1 platoon with 3 Tanks and 1 Universal Carrier. These have a Jager Platoon in their way to the objective with him having to assault to get within 4" on turn 6.
Menawhile, my Jager platoon advanced down the flank towards the dug-in Motor Platoon - I assault and wipe them out for 1 casualty. So start my 6th Turn on the Objective with nothing that can contest them.

Enjoyed every game other than the Trench Fight, you really need to tailor your force for this mission. Then again if I had been defending on this mission, I think I would have stood a better chance.

Will need to play a few of these before the next tournament.

Here are some photos of the tables I played over - as can be seen a lot of scenery on each one, makes GW tables look like barren planets...

Nice Report, and great pictures, we normally play with this ammount of terrain or more at the club, sounds like you had a great time and Id love to face your list as it sounds very competative. We gotta get to one of these Mr King.

The Tournament was 1750pts Late War, all published books and official PDFs.

How about a game of FoW next Monday?

Phil. Did u find the Russian armies to be the toughest to defeat?

The Trench Fight game against the Russians, I think it was the Scenerio that beat me. Everyone told me I needed to take Pioneers to remove Barbed Wire and Minefields - but I decided to use Panzers to destroy the Barbed Wire (but failed the Stormtrooper roll to move) - If I could have got both Fallshirmjager across to the trenches together, they would have smashed through the one Strelkovy Company.

The Encounter was close, my mistake was kampfgrouping the 2iC with 3 teams from the Jager Platoon hold the objective (instead of just grouping him with just the HQ Mortars). This meant he had a 33 team strong Strelkovy Company (14 Rifle + 7 SMG + 1 Comand + 5 Sappers + 4 Flamethrowers + HQ Command + HQ Kommissar) verses my Fallshirmjager Platoon 10 team strong (6 Rifle/MG + Command + 2 attached HMGs + CiC)

So I was outnumbered 3 to 1 - very historically accurate, by the time he got within 10" he was only 23 Strong in three waves (to reduce Mortar casualties), after my assault he was down to 5 Stands (HQ Command + Kommissar + Command + 1 Flamethrower + 1 SMG Team) and I was down to 4 Stands (1 Rifle\MG + Command + HMG + CiC)

It was 50/50 if he could wipe me off the objective, but the Flamerthrower killed the HMG, so down to 4 vs 3 teams and he succeeds in hitting with all his stands...

So in conclusion I would say that Russian Strelkovy Blobs are scary and the number of cheap Tanks they can bring is a worry but nothing a good defensive setup can't deal with.
On the flip side - Assaulting a well defended Russian Line is very hard to do.

Hi I took quite a few photos of the games and here is the link.

I sent it to Nobby but he is busy as usual so please spread the link around so people can see their own figures.
