Horus Heresy & Malifaux

Permanent Linkby DaBoss on Thu Jan 02, 2014 6:18 pm

Had another good day of painting with my son.

I managed to Biel-Tan Ink Wash my Sons of Horus.

Notice: I've added the Brass etched Sons of Horus Symbols to the Spartans.
Next I need to Dry Brush them with Dawnstone to lighten the Green Wash to match the test 5 I painted last year.
Still waiting for the Sponsons for the Spartans

Then we both spent some time painting up my next crew for Malifaux (actually Bradley quite likes them but using Somer Teeth Jones)
Here is what I've got finished for Ophelia Crew:

Ophelia Master
2 Bayou Gremlins
2 Slop Haulers
4 Piglets
2 Stuffed Piglets
2 War Pigs

Bradley is painting up the other 5 Bayou Gremlins and Somer.

I think Ophelia will be on the table for tomorrows game of Malifaux 50 Soulstones.

Who's painting these for you. Lol. I seem to remember an IG army at the w40K GT that was painted with primary colours only. And one colour each only. ;)

Looking good da boss. Why not enter one in the competition this month?

What!?

Must admit I've had a bad rep from the guys at my club, for years I was only interested in getting the models basically 3 colours and based (just!), I was more interested in the battle.

Since I started playing campaign weekends, Flames Of War and Malifaux; I've fallen in love with actually painting!
I think going down to 15mm and having to paint small details has actually improved my 28mm painting; just a larger surface.

The breakthrough was Malifaux, instead of having to paint up 100+ models for a force in WH40K or even more in Fantasy; Malifaux I was just concentrating on half a dozen miniatures.

I reckon I spend about 1 - 2 hours per model in total now compared to maybe 10 mins each in past. When I painted up Primarch Angron, I must of spent at least 10 hours of effort.
Getting proper Sable bushes than the tat from GW has really helped, and I think GW paints have improved, though I'm using a mixture of GW, Vallajo and other acrylics to get the colour and tone on my models.
Learning how to shade, blend and highlight my models; and learning from my son all about the colour wheel.

But overall - it's the fact that I find it a pleasure to paint (relaxing) that has kept me doing more - still have a mountain of models in boxes and trays waiting to be touched.

As to entering competitions - I'm nowhere near good enough, just happy that people appreciate what I've achieved :D

Very well done. I too am enjoying the painting side at present. I find the reward equal to the result and as you improve you then want to spend more time on them. ;)

Keep it up.

Your stuff looks great Phil, I've defo seen a massive improvement. Painting because you enjoy it instead of because you have to does make a difference.
