Contest Line Up 2014

Re: Contest Line Up 2014

If we do a unit competition, it would be as open ended as we could make it.

For example, it would be for infantry. So you could enter a single infantry model, like mine and KInG's grotesques, or you could enter a SM sniper squad of 5, or a DE wyche squad with a hekatrix.

We wouldn't want to limit it too much.

We could do a vehicle competition, but allow vehicle squadrons to be entered as well. So you could enter 1 baneblade or a trio of land speeders.

Still open to all suggestions.

But as it stands now, February is looking to be objective marker or simple objective. We don't want to hold up the next comp.

id just like to weigh in here

King, if we make a months entries ''hq unit, with no less than 5 units in it'', that would seriously restrict, and actually cut out more than a few people from entry

if like me they dont run 40k anymore, they cant enter

for example, theres no command teams in Dredd, you have senior judges, chief justice and thats it, so while yes, i could paint 5 judges and call them senior judges, i'd be disqualified from the contest because they aren't HQ units

for the vehicle squadron, well great for flames of war, alright for 40k (Expensive!)
what about malifaux? there arent any vehicle units in it

thats why we made the vehicle month ''vehicle/monster'', that way anyone is good to enter (for example of the malifaux monsters, click here)

what you have to keep in mind, is that the site isnt primarily 40k anymore, you've got flames of war, malifaux, dropzone commander, dredd and so on

what you're suggesting would pretty much cut out more than a few of those game systems

we're trying to keep things as open as possible so that anyone can enter

IMO it would be fine to phrase things in 40k terminology and have Talus/TW then accept non-40k entries and/or equivalent entries on a discretionary basis.

So a "Command Squad" might be:
A SM Command Squad
An IG Command/Platoon HQ Squad
A "major" command model and 2-3 "minor" command models from <insert skirmish game>
A capital ship and an escort squadron from <insert spaceship game>
A fighter character, a wizard character & a battle standard from WH
etc

(I don't think "command unit" is the easiest example to work with, but I think you can see where I'm going)

That's why I suggested a 'duel' - that caters for all tastes - be it bolt action, 40k, fantasy, malifaux or anything else you can do a mini-duel diorama - for instance it caters to painters for the painting of the models, modellers for clever thinking on the posing of the models, and scenery fanatics for the scenic base the duelling characters are set up on. Just food for thought.

Thanks Herne!
Something for us to think about.
Bottom line is that we are trying to make these contests so that they will be open to and appeal to all members of the site.

Once we get the February contest up and running, we'll update the proposed contests for the rest of the year.

To throw another spanner in the works I've got a few 6mm epic projects that would maybe fit into some months. More along the lines of super heavies and titans - maybe scenery as I've just started a modular urban board. I'll make sure to check each month before entering though. :-)

Well, a super heavy is a vehicle, correct?

And we've also got a couple of "freestyle" contests where anything goes.

I don't know many other systems, and what's available in their line ups, but you are right to consider them and keep it open to as many as possible, obviously.. ;) but I was just throwing a few ideas around really to get people thinking outside the box of the list we had, that was all really.

As bara suggested, you guys could consider all entries even loosely connected to anything you decide on as a category anyways :D

as for duel, it does cover a lot of the aspects in one, I'd rather see them as separate. And duel has a lot of work in scenery that may not be usable in normal games. I would be trying to make a base for it I could use in game, and a pose that also is acceptable in game, and not modelling two guys stuck together.. just so the time painting was going towards my goal of painting my collection. In other words, not creating more hobby work doing something outside my current list of stuff to do.

side note, grotesques would need a minimum of 3 to be a unit ;)

I know that, that's why I thought the infantry contest could be open to either a single infantry model, or a legal infantry unit, or even just a few infantry figures someone might want to do up to "flesh out" a unit they already have.

Should have an updated list by tomorrow.

Just to play devils advocate - bear in mind a duel doesn't have to be a complex diorama and as with many of the new forge world pieces the different participants can still be separate gaming pieces on their own independent bases simply matched into the adjoining base. For example the Loken vs abbadon fw diorama.

Well, there's going to be 2 "freestyle" competitions. In these, anything is acceptable. You could do up a duel while I might enter something like the forgotten prisoner of castle mare'.

I'll post up the revised competition schedule later today, and Talus and I still want input from the members here.

Looks good. Implied question in red below

I think that puts me in for:
April - another Darklands model I would imagine
May - Helldrake or a Darklands model
(maybe) August - Aegis Defence Line, depends on Gibraltar trip date, otherwise nothing
September - maybe a 40k model nope lol, probably Darklands again ;)
October - surprisingly wide choice here....in the grim darkness of modern day war/board games everything is the stuff of nightmares apparently  choice here....could opt for KoW Undead, Deadzone Plague, Darklands Infernii, Hell Dorado Demons, 40k/WHF Chaos, WHF Tomb Kings or a Kingdom Death monster (and that's just off the top of my head!)
November - I imagine the opposite of what I do in May
December - no thoughts on such a wide option at this time, though it might be the ideal slot to do another Dreadball team (I assume a sports team is considered equivalent to a unit?)

So 6 out of 11, a maybe and 4 months to concentrate on whatever I fancy sounds like a good balance to me :D
