Humbrol Spray Matt Varnish

Postby RotweillerofJustice » Tue Jan 12, 2010 2:35 pm

I purchased a tin of this the other week from Modelzone. Essentially I was looking for a way to stop hand painting all my figurse with matt varnish once I'd done them. I was however very disapointed with the results.

Instead of a nice matt finish to my Knights of Minas Tirith they are now shinier than Rudolhs nose!!

I have attached some pics of the figures done with Humbrol and others done with the Citadel matt varnish. Judge for yourselves and let me know what you think.

I would also appreciate it if anyone can recommend a decent matt varnish that comes in a relatively large pot.

Apparently testors dullcote is the spray to use, although its a nightmare to find in the UK.

Will have a look for it. But if anyone has a link to their website it would be a help.

It's not very protective however, so I suggest you varnish the models using a more protective, shinier varnish first, then put a coat of dullcote over that to take away the shine.

I use The Army Painter Anti-shine varnish - many places in the UK stock it (KInG! Army Painter stuff!)

Ditto myself. You have to be careful or it can 'frost' the surface of the model if you put too thick a coat on, but this stuff comes in a large pot for a 'reasonable' price (KING) and does a good job. I reccomend Maelstrom games until Gaming Figures starts stocking it....

I currently get mine from Maelstrom.

Frosting can happen with any spray varnish :) You just to have spray light coats in the right conditions.

I've managed to counter something frosting up by using a hairdryer on it before now (you have to be quick though!)

I use testors dullcote (not a problem to find over here) and as Matt said the key is light coats and adequate drying time between coats.
I've found they protect the models very well.

Once upon a time, in a land far far away...

I was using some gw varnish spray and it frosted my mini's up to buggery.
I took them and the spray into the shop to moan and was told that 1 in something like 1,000,000 are either entirely propellant (which faq's up the minis) or has too much propellant.

They replaced the spray and gave me a box of night lords free!
You might want to have a moan.

On another occasion, I sprayed a unit of shining spears in the shed of sorrows.
Not thinking, I hadn't been out there for months and the surface I used was dusty. The spray kicked up the dust (or so it seems) and made a right mess out of them.
