Hunter's page of useful tips

Postby hunter101 » Sat Aug 06, 2011 9:56 pm

Ok I been thinking. (Dangerous I know but hay) My web sight is pretty dead these days so why bother posting tip bits on there. Seem to get more responts on hear. So hear it is the Question and Antser page with t odd bit of bad spelling as the spell checker has slightly improved my spelling so not so infuriating to tho's Dyslexic haters out there.

How this works. Pm me with a question and i will both post the question and the antser (sure that has a w in it sum were) and open up the chatting topics. Eg How to make a Cape/Cloak or how to do some weathering.
I have 22 years of experience and its just going to wast. Tried the Teaching others path and got told You can have a driving lesson for £10 and hour. So doors open.

antser (sure that has a w in it sum were)
- And you'd be correct, answer has a W in it somewhere :)
Great idea and good luck on your new approach I know some people have been begging for you to do it, so I hope they now step up with questions.Maybe if it goes on a while a mod will sticky it to the top of P+M or something?

As soon as I can think of something that can help me, that I have a chance of being able to do, I'll ask you how its done :D
Barely even lurking..

I am dyslexic too, as is my wife. Although I am sure you can tell I had a lot of extra help as a child, so it doesn't hinder me to badly these days.

One thing I always wondered though.. Why is Dyslexia such a hard word to spell?

Anywho, great to have the brains of another experienced modeler to pick from :)

Right Q and A time.

Q. "I want to make a Baron model, but I don't really know how to do up the cloak."

A. Ok then. Green stuff is a possibility but I find this to be crap as it can go so wrong in so meany ways. Hunters Way is Paper. Yes Paper. one A4 piece of paper. Now look at the shape of the Cloak and imadgen it flat on the floor. As Cloak's go they will be thin at the top and wide at the bottom. The thin part is shoulder wide. the wide bit is slightly wider than the legs spread.

After this has been cut out and tinkered with to the desired effect spray it with chaos black. This will make it go ridged after drying. Add what ever detail in paint to it. And for lasts Purity seal it to make it go shiny and for extra bond. Then add back to model. And Ta Darrrrrrrrr!

Q. How do you base coat a mini?

A. Take it to your local car garage. :D

Black. Always Black. Even if it is going to be white. Black is a stronger shade than white. So Black first and then 1 or 2 LIGHT coats of white. You will get Shading that will help you determine what is light and dark. Some say Grey is ace. But look at the model and 9 out of 10 times its always grey already. Grey has no shading or depth of field.

ok still on basecoats :) you spray a model up and you can still see a bit of metal shining back at you from an awkward spot (for example think aquila on chest behind bolter), do you keep spraying till you get it and hope you dont ruin other detail, buy a brush on basecoat, assemble after painting, or is there another option?

I know were your coming from hear. Ok If this happens I find after spray Pint has dried and this effect is visible all you need to do is tutch it up with a bit of paint on brush. EG a dry Brush or standard detail brush. :)

Q: when I try to paint my black Templars I find the white highlight on the edges is too strong, what build up would you use, as mine always seems like a White line on black armour :(

A. If you mean the general highlights, Try dry brushing with white on to black insted of painting it. Far quicker and looks good. But remember this. Purity seal it after as it will just rub off on your fingers or what ever. :)

C'mon then hunter.

Give a crappy moddler like me a breakdown of basing. Stuff like:

How to make a custom base using GS/modelling putty
Other ways of making great bases
Using flock
Making snow

Gowan, I know you want to teach a buffoon like me!

EDIT - weather powders kung fu styles will be requested at a later date...
When in deadly danger
When beset by doubt
Run in little circles
Wave your arms and shout
- parody of the litany of command
