Mars Attacks

Postby Talus » Thu Oct 16, 2014 11:47 pm

So i made the mistake of putting these guys in my contest entry, which im struggling with due to issues with my hands...

that aside, my god, the plastic they're made of is horrid!

its soft, bendy, a nightmare to clean up, god knows how it'll look when paint goes on!

anyone else having or had issues with them?

i mean really, how do they expect you to paint these things when you can barely get a mold line off without hacking out the detail around it! >_>

im in a ranty mood today, can anyone tell?

Couldn't tell mate.

And yes the plastic the mars attacks martians are made of is terrible for painting.

I guess you'll get a better idea once you prime them.

I have Loka and it's the same material. It paints up fine, and I had no issues with mould lines.

Having said that, I did not back Mars Attacks, so I don't know how bad they are. Hot water is your friend with these though. Dip the model in very hot water for a few seconds - it softens the plastic and makes slicing off the mould lines much easier.

Also, if any parts are bent out of shape, soften in hot water, push and hold in the correct position, and either wait for the plastic to cool, or dip in cold water. It should retain the shape. I stress should, as a couple of Loka pieces I have still have slightly bent staffs. :(

Best of luck.

Hi Talus,

How did you find these when painting? You're Halloween entries look good, so I take it you had no issues with getting paint to adhere?
I ask, as I have Dreadball Extreme coming, and these are going to be of similar construction.

As I said, the few (and it is only 3 I think!) Loka I painted seemed okay, so I'm hopeful . . . .

Cheers

well, to be brutally honest, the plastic is horrid, its a nightmare to clean up because as you take off one mold line, you risk taking off half the detailing

i primed them twice with halfords grey car primer, the same stuff i used for forge world resin, with how the plastic was, i didnt want to risk the paint peeling of flaking off

so i'd just recommend priming them all twice and praying

Cheers Talus - I'll bear that in mind when DBX arrives.

I could paint some Loka again, but I have other stuff that needs painting!

These are board game pieces, not war gaming pieces. They are pre assembled and designed for people who don't paint or have never played war games before to play out the box. The choice of material is deliberate.

Hot water fixes any bent parts just like Berger says... Same trick as the restic stuff.

I've got tons of MA stuff (I had to really.. I wrote the final book!) and I think the detail in the models is pretty good. I sprayed some up with halfords grey, just the one coat, and the detail shows up even more. I'll report back once I've painted some up. I've got to do that for the Ironwatch magazine for December.
