Tip from cool mini or not

Postby timewizard » Sun Feb 16, 2014 10:17 pm

Saw this on cool mini or not, just in time for what I hope is the end of winter.
It's about priming (and applying matte varnish) in cold weather.

Thanks to our Cool Mini or Not in house painter Jen Haley we bring you the first in our ongoing tip of the month series.
So here is our February Tip!

Miniature work doesn't have to come to a halt in freezing temperatures. During cold weather, it's possible to spray prime and seal as usual, as long as your spray can is at room temperature, about 70 degrees F. Tuck the can under your arm for a few minutes to warm it if it's been stored in a chilly room, or when stepping outside to spritz your miniature. Make sure the mini is at room temperature, too. (Miniatures, of course, much prefer being set in a warm spot to being tucked under one's arm. Especially the pointy ones.) Bring the sprayed model back inside quickly to dry. Or set them beneath a high-wattage incandescent bulb in an unheated garage or storage area.

Yep - all my cans that I'm likely to use are kept in the house for this very reason.

Yep me too. It's worth remembering for all those painters out there that in really cold temperatures it may still whiten, especially on metal - remember metal drops in temperature REALLY quickly, also - ever noticed how shower water will leave the head hot, but on a cold morning may hit u at a much cooled temperature? If the air is cold the tiny droplets of spray passing thru the cool air will cool very fast.
