so..... after getting sidetracked by a million and one things (it's always the 'one' thing that takes the time), I managed to get 'phase one' of the gaming table put together.
This version is made up of two Ikea Kallax cubes on castors. Each has a 2*4 sheet of 18mm MDF attached using Ikea Capita angled brackets. The additional height puts the gaming surface at roughly bar height, with a recessed surface underneath for keeping things to hand while playing.
The two halves are joined using table latches (one at each end) that lock-in pretty tightly. Since the pics were taken I've painted the tops in 3 coats of blackboard paint, which was the most cost-effective and hardwearing finish. It also means we can use the bare table top for theory-crafting x-wing
Next up I'm sketching out some inserts for a couple of the cubes so that I can store 1' square tiles for laying out our bolt action games. I'll most likely add a 3rd section later in the year if we decide that a 6*4 would see some use, but that needs a re-working of the man-cave first.
And on the painting front, stioll not quite there with my
BA Russians, although I have been dabbling with some X-Wing. Here's a pic of the Flying Lizards list that I'm currently playing - Miranda and Kanan
Must get these Ruskies finished. Pics soon - I promise
