My New Dark Angels Project

Postby markb » Mon Nov 26, 2012 5:23 pm

As the title says I am starting a new Dark Angels army and am doing a project log on it in the hope of keeping myself motivated, I am notoriously bad for starting armies and never actually finishing them unless I have a motivation to do it, in the past this was usually getting them ready for GTs. To give you an idea of how bad I am at this I have never actually managed to finish a WFB army despite starting just about every army there is and having played it since 92!

Right so here goes. I had been toying with the idea of starting a DA army over a year ago, originally it was going to be a Ravenwing army but then I thought that I would use the unused SM bits I have that I never quite got around to using in my vanilla SM army so it changed onto a Mixedwing idea. Then I sort of lost my mojo for 40K with all the rumours that were floating around about it so the idea went on the back burner. Eventually though I succumbed to the Dark Side and bought the 6th ed rule book, read it and actually quite liked the look of it and decided to give 40K another go. Of course then Dark Vengeance was released and I just loved the DA models in it so the idea of a DA army came back to the forefront.

After getting a copy of DV and swapping my Chaos stuff for Elvis's DA stuff, including the limited edition Chaplain model, I decided that this would form the core of the army. I then made the fatal mistake of going through my bitz box looking for SM stuff I could use. I say fatal as what was originally planned to be an hours job turned into about four when I got side tracked looking at all the cool old models I had, along with several moments of "I don't remember buying that!" or "what the **** is that!". Eventually though my search yielded the following:

1 FW MkIVc Predator Annihilator
1 Whirlwind
14 Assault Marines
1 box of Terminators
1 box of normal Scouts
1 box of Scouts with sniper rifles
19 Tactical Marines (although they don't all have arms, weapons and backpacks)
2 missile launchers, 1 lascannon, one heavy bolter and one meltagun
A bikers torso with meltagun
A Rhino
Half a Razorback(!) with a FW TLHB turret
Most of a LR
2 slightly damaged Landspeeders with a few bits missing
1 FW Dreadnought plasma cannon arm

So out of that lot and the contents of 2 DV boxes I tried to make an army. And failed! While there is a decent amount of possible units there I realised that it wouldn't be very competitive (and I just had to have a Dread) so I resolved to buy a few items, or more to the point get the wife to get it me for Christmas! Going back to the DA Codex I came up with the following list, I know that its still not very competitive, mainly due to the higher cost and limited options of the DA Codex, and it is also going to be changed due to the new COdex coming out soon, but it was mainly done to give me a frame work to work in. Here is the list:

HQ
Company Master
Combi plasma, power sword

Librarian

Elites
Dreadnought with plasma cannon

DW squad - 5 Termies with assault cannon, CML and chain fist

7 Veterans - Rhino, power sword and meltagun

Troops
Tac Squad - 10 marines with plasma gun and plasma cannon. Rhino

Tac Squad - 10 marines with meltagun and missile launcher. Rhino

Fast Attack
Assault Squad - 10 marines with power sword, melta bombs and combat shield

RW Attack Squadron - 6 bikers with 2 melta guns, melta bombs and power sword

RW Landspeeder Typhoon

Heavy
Predator Annihilator

Whirlwind

That little lot comes to 2000 pts. It is worth noting that the same army, as near as you can get it, under the SM Codex comes in at 165 points less.

So with the list sorted I got the wife to order me the stuff that I needed (as I work away we had Christmas VERY early in our house!). For the Veterans I ordered two of the DA upgrade frames and will use the unused robed figures for sergeants in the Assault and second Tactical Squad. I also got one of the FW Deimos pattern Rhinos for the veterans as well.

So now that I have everything I undercoated the two tactical squads and the DW and brought them away with me to paint. I hope to get the first test model done in the next few days, I'm using one of the old Battle for Macragge models to do this. As soon as it is done I will post the pictures up here. I hope a few of you will follow this project, give me criticism and generally help to keep me motivated!

Well as promised here is the first test model I've done. To be honest there's a couple of things I'm not happy with, I badly ballsed up the Company marking on the left knee and some of the highlighting is a bit iffy but this was a learning experience and once I start I'll hopefully get it right. This model was mainly to see if the colour scheme would work which I think it does. The photos aren't the best as they were taken on my phone, for instance the highlighting on the red of the boltgun hasn't come out very well. Comments and criticism welcome.

I'm not great at the painting but willing to assist in any way you would want/enjoy to do with your list..since LH has been using DA+ guard exclusively against me for 5+years I pretty much have it optimised and mathed out in my head (and a basic grasp of the common knowledge rumours of the next one).
For current codex.. I'd strongly suggest a belial like character .. (but since in the next one he'll be rather rubbish just make it a rather spectacular looking terminator sergeant or something) and add a second squad of termies. The multiple different types of terminators in the upcoming codex will probably mean that you hold back on completely blinging them out until you know a bit more points wise.
I'd shelve the whirlwind and assault squad (for now) play a lower bracket and play to the codexs strengths... but thats just me.
Keep up with it :D (and is that the kind of criticism you want or since its all bought is that unhelpful?)
Barely even lurking..

Methinks they look good!
Extreme highlighting is a pain to do.
Main suggestion being keep the paint quite thin = goes on better and, if you arse it up, wipes off easily.

Glazing is pretty handy too.
Not only does it allow you to see what you are doing, but can blend it all together.
Possible dark green + light highlights + black wash over all green areas.

KMB, I see what your saying about the Whirlwind but I have one eye on the rumour that in the next Codex they'll be giving it a Skyfire option. If it doesn't get it then it will be dropped, Whirlwinds have never been the same since they got rid of the minefield thrower. Again with the Assault Squad I am with you, its between them and a second DW squad, I've just bought a load of TH and SS from Bitzbox to convert the second DV DW squad into Hammernators so I think I will play about with it and see which is best. Obviously to do that I will have to convert a Belial as I am maxed out on Elites. I did hear a rumour that there will be a RW assault squad type thing so again I have one eye on that. This is also the reason why I am holding off painting those models until I know for certain. Any advice is always welcome. I'm not too sure about the Libby, do you think I should go with him and Belial/Company Master or maybe work the Chaplain in?

ruffian, thanks for the compliment. I did water the paint down, the main problem I had was that the light where I was was quite bad so I couldn't see what I was doing very well, I've just moved into a new room where the light is better so it shouldn't be such a problem now. That and I started rushing it a bit coz I had to back to work after lunch! I was toying with the idea of using some thinned down Badab Black, I have the Vallejo glaze medium and would maybe use that to thin it down, might give it a shot now.

Here is the test model with a glaze added. It does calm the highlights down quite a bit

Nice mini fella. Is that just caliban green you've used and then highlighted?

Thanks mate. Yeah its Caliban Green highlighted with Warboss Green then Skarsnik Green and given a glaze of Badab Black in the last photo.

I have to say I'm not a fan of caliban green for my DA's. Still prefer dark angels green as I think it's a richer colour. I have started using caliban as my base coat though.

I prefer the darker tone of Caliban Green and darker colours overall which is why I'm using Khorne Red as the base colour for the bolt guns etc. Well that and you can't get Dark Angels Green any more! :)

Apparently Cote d'Arms dark elf green is the same as dark angels green. They're always worth a try for old colour conversions.
