Scorpion Shipyards

Postby Talus » Tue May 28, 2013 8:29 pm

No, im not making a shipyard

though its very very tempting with the amount of ships i have now :P

no this is just me getting ready for Junes contest entry ;)

so here, we have what the battlestar used to look like:

ImageImage

and here, we have it now:

ImageImageImageImageImage

the metallics on the ribs have been darkened then highlighted, the armor completely redone, the previous transfers removed (at great pain to my finger when the knifeblade met it sharply) and replaced with a brass plate, and i even went and repainted the base from dull gold to shiney stand out goodness :)

the related material for the contest will be showcased over the next couple of days once work starts on them!

but here is a little teaser ;)

so in an effort to keep all my ship related material in here, im updating with the battlestars from the contest, most of you have already seen them, so dont get too excited, aside from a little dust, nothing has changed :P

ImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

and the picture that netted me first place =)

Image

here we have the Viper Mk VII

Image

and here we have something new

courtesy of a deal with Cain, i picked this up for a low low price of £25, which given the age and relative rarity of the kit, is a pretty good deal!

a 1/350 scale Klingon B'Rel (Bird of Prey) with wings locked in Cruise position

his some snags during assembly, namely pieces not lining up properly, but over all its in pretty good shape!

and as of about an hour ago (as of this post), its green!

ImageImageImageImageImageImage

still plenty of work left to do on it, at this second im undecided if the wings should be multi tone green (like most depictions), or shades of red (The way i always see the ship), the ribbing will be silver with a heavy black wash (like the repainted Acropolis above)

here's the engine (not finished) and... whatever the red part on the head is meant to be (seriously, ive never worked out if its sensors, cooling or just for show

Image

you get a cookie if you can spot where i fixed it, cause some muppet (who shall remain nameless), snapped the thing in half...

and lastly, a shot of the ship on its stand

Image

oh... ok, seems the ship cloaked right as the picture was taken, will get back to you with that one =P

for a single session with the airbrush, i think its coming out pretty damn good so far

and, in other news, since this is my ship thread, i may as well show off some others i have on the table waiting to be done (please note the scale of them next to the Archon)

ImageImageImageImage

TOS USS Enterprise and JJVERSE USS Enterprise

to be painted soon (tm)

oh, here's a scale shot of the B'rel on the TOS Enterprise

Image

also got another ship, but its more of a submarine, and its coming much later since its something special :)

i was tempted to light it, as with the enterprises

but ive got no experience doing it, and even the pro i found on youtube had trouble with LEDs on the Brel because of the way the kits made (though he did have the novel idea of putting the flip switch in the back of the engine :P)

if i do another one, perhaps, maybe, we'll see

Adopts serious face..
Well if you really want to do it.. maybe not those models.
a) how tough is that plastic (inc when you compromise its integrity with holes)
b) how specifically balanced/weighted are they to those stands.

As a noob to such things myself I've mathhammered my brain into believing giving headlights to a landraider would be much more forgiving starting point (not worrying about weight/balance packs lots of intenal space for a cheaper circuit board noob retail thing and if everything goes wrong you just fill in 2 holes)..
I'm just being over demanding craving novelty in all things at mo
have you seen the guy who did the light up thousand sons with green scary glow?

They look nice, although strangely familiar. ;)

As for lighting them, well, maybe you'll try that on a different ship.

well, the re-release of the bird of prey kit was updated to include options for landed (wings up instead of level, and two feet), thats the one i most see lit up since it can be secured directly to a flat base

the stand provided is a nightmare, offers very little in the way of balance, i think even the greenstuff i put on to fill gaps is going to tip the balance, so will probably end up gluing it on (which i hate doing)

inside, theres plenty of space for batteries and wires, the cavity runs directly from the engine at the back right down to the torpedo launcher (which was a clear part specifically for lighting), the wings are two part (top and bottom), so with some creative drilling wires can be run down them too, but it would require a completely scratch built gun for those to be lit

the enterprises are the same, nice big space in the saucer and hull, with room in the neck and nacelle pylons for wires and lights

in fact, the deflectors on both are removable (twist lock into place), and the supports for the inner hull are just the right size for a battery pack

also, all those little windows (Which took an hour to put in to each one >_>) are see through, so i have no doubt the kits are made with lighting in mind

ive got some pretty good light blocking paint (the chrome effect silver) so that isnt an issue, would just require an obscene amount of liquid mask over the windows :P

so long story short, if i knew more about how to wire things up, to get the leds or fibre optics going, i'd give it a shot, but i dont really have the time or funds to start with that just yet

but, ive said before, the next time i do a battlestar (galactica, not pegasus), i'd light it, i know the kit pretty well so i know where i could drill/cut and not lose structural integrity (pun pun PUN!)

ironically, i'll have more cash in my pocket in the new year, so i might give it a shot then after consulting tutorial sites (unless timewizard fancies putting a tutorial or two up about it)

I got a cheap kit from Maplins with LEDs and resistors, and a nice clear diagram showing which resistors to use for various serial and/or parallel wiring with single and multiple LEDs, made it simple to wire up my son's railway initially. Later on I picked up LEDs from eBay with the correct resistors for 12v already inline which made it much easier to deal with the street lighting.

If you can drill a small hole and slide in wires and an LED, with a resistor on one of the wires, that's pretty much all there is to it - without the resistor the LED will burn out, so it's a crucial part of the circuit.

i would LOVE to paint a big B5 station (with a lovely little Omega Destroyer beside it)

but every station ive found has always been £300+ and im yet to find a complete Omega...

now a Whitestar... oh that would be like the ultimate challenge :D

gotta love that part Vorlon hull colouring ;)

bit of a small update today

went back over the bird of prey with the airbrush, lightened the panels a bit, redid some of the shading

while the camera makes it look just a shade lighter, its more like 3 :P

its zinc chromite green, about the same as goblin green, darkened a bit as it went over the previous layer, but thats what i hoped for (to the eye, its still a fair bit darker)

i went back last night and redid the GS work on the wings and neck, redid the ''head'' too with some small spots, bit of scraping, bit of filling, its all sorted now =)

ImageImage

unless i find any problems with what ive done tomorrow (in better lighting), im calling the green work done

next up, a visit from base paint reds (i lack masking tape, so its all hand work from here) on the wings and torp and a few panels here and there, then a dose of weathering powders! yes thats right, im finally breaking into that side of weathering =P

to achieve an aged look, as befitting a B'Rel class Bird of Prey, powders are the best option (so im told)

will also give me a chance to test out airbrush varnish!
