Spent a couple of hours tonight trimming the spare right ear, the one on the helmet was thinner than left and was beginning to bug me. Much happier with the new one, similar thickness to the left one and covers the seam better.

Here's a photo showing the two right ears, the first one at the back and clearly thinner.

Also countersunk the screw holes, and once I'd checked everything fitted i dismantled the helmet and have it a thorough wash to revive dust, pencil marks, and mould release that was on the inside. Leaving it to dry it overnight, should be able to start painting tomorrow.

Started painting, first the traps and tears given a base coat of black as they're grey with a black outline, a rough first coat of grey on the teeth (will need two or the coats to hide the white), outlined the ears, painted the vocoder and hovimics, and positioned the templates for tube stripes. Will be starting the grey this evening.

Disaster! Despite painting the tube stripes white first to try and seal the edges so the blue paint wouldn't bleed through, it did.

Left the blue to dry overnight, and then carefully picked at the blobs with a cocktail stick. Phew.

Also got the tears and traps finished with the required lines, and bolted it all together firmly. Brow was trimmed at a slight angle at each end, and the ear screws painted white.

With all the painting complete, the only things left to do now are to fit the visor and chin strap, and then cut the ear screws down inside.

Visor is fitted, so from the outside the helmet is now complete. Just need to find the eyelet tool to add small eyelets to the chin straps, and then trim the screws back inside.

Looks good. And there was me thinking you just ordered the helmet, and put it on your head when it arrived...!

A pre-built helmet costs a lot more. RS Propmasters is £300 and is really accurate, SDS which isn't movie accurate is £250, even a lot of the crap ones are over £200. Mine cost around £110 including postage from the US for the kit and the extra parts to finish it, and it's movie accurate.

Managed to order a Doopydoos resin replica E-11 blaster full kit on Friday, hoping that doesn't take long to arrive. Should have an almost movie accurate blaster for around £45 instead of paying £130+ for pre-built one.

That's who SDS is - Shepperton Design Studios. They lost the court case Lucas brought against them in the US, so they can't sell to the US, but they can still sell them here. Plenty of info about them on the various SW sites, their stuff is well made but it's not screen accurate, they call it "idealised". It's about 90% right, but to get their stuff approved for the 501st they need to be modified. They do a full built suit for £600 but will then need around £200 of mods doing.

Then again an RS Props full built suit is £1400. Ouch.

A kit from the same guy I bought from is about £200, but then needs the undersuit, gloves, and all the elastic and snaps fitting, so total would be around £350 once complete.

So the uniform comes out of your pay if you join the galactic empire?
I admire those at sci fi conventions in the full uniforms now.

Completed the helmet on Sunday. Almost messed it up trimming the screws inside, one got really hot and started to pull through the ABS. Luckily it's right on the bottom edge of one ear so it's not really noticeable. I used the tin snips to trim the rest of the screws.

Will post up a new topic for the E-11 blaster when the kit arrives :)
