Private Messages: some suggestions

Postby LordMalekTheRedKnight » Fri Feb 01, 2008 7:43 pm

Hey all :)

just wondering about the PM system, and ive got some suggestions:

- when we hover the mouse cursor over a thread title, we get a box that shows us a little preview of the first and last posts in that thread - would it be possible to have a similar preview when we hover over the Subject of a PM?
- could it be made possible to Delete PMs whilst reading them, rather than having to go back into our Inbox to do so?
- could it be made possible to Forward messages in our Sent Box?

so what do you think? :?:

oh and was it ever sorted so we could send PMs to multiple recipients at once?

does anyone else have any more ideas?

cheers :)

~ Tim

Only greedy selfish ones
like upping the size (kb s wise) of the avatars, so I can mess around with them a bit
excluding code tags from the word limit of sigs.
Can the search for users name be made easier ( I don't understand the wildcard system, I tried looking for lord M and nothing but the exact thing seemed to find him (which kind of defeated the point).
But again with all admin things none of what I've listed will actually make me a better poster or improve everyone elses ability to understand me one jot. 3rd bit might help some new folks maybe (but I think they'd just get our names off our posts)
Barely even lurking..

well i meant suggestions Re: PMs, but i dont mind us widening the scope of the thread. :)

i wouldnt mind more avatar space (my boy is growing). ;)

oh yes, i second that one. :!:

the PM search? you need to put a * for a wildcard, for example:
lord*
finds every name that starts with "lord".

the Memberlist does that automatically though (without the need for a *), so maybe it could be standardised?

cheers :)

Should be possible, I'll look into it.

That should be easy enough too, just need to create the appropriate link/form to handle it.

LordMalekTheRedKnight wrote:- could it be made possible to Forward messages in our Sent Box?

That might be more fiddly, but should certainly be possible - I might be able to get it to pull up a "new message" form with the text already filled in from the "forwarded" message.

Pretty sure it was - you just need to put a semi-colon between each name, IIRC.

How big are you suggesting?

killmaimburn wrote:excluding code tags from the word limit of sigs.

The character limit is defined by the database - the column can only hold 255 characters max, including all the tags. I should be able to change the column definition and find any coded limits and up them though.

As Tim notes, using lord* and clicking the find button should have brought his name up.

I'll look into making the * optional. I did look for AJAX scripts that might make this better, like the vBulletin system where as you type the possible matches appear, but I haven't got to grips with AJAX yet and the only code I found was designed for the non-ported version of phpBB, and adapting it didn't look straightforward.

i tried it both with and without a space between the names (i tried: "killmaimburn;spack" and "killmaimburn; spack", without quote marks of course), but both times i got:
"Sorry, but no such user exists."

:(

also, and this is just a minor thing, but is it possible for the cursor to move into the box when you click "Find a username" so that you can just start typing the name?

cheers :)

PM rollover preview is working now.

Multiple recipients isn't on the site - I thought I'd installed it, looks like I didn't. I'll try to sort it out later.

I'll also sort out longer signature handling later.

As to the cursor handling, I'll have to see if I can add a little javascript to do that.
