Spam registrations

Postby Spack » Sat Mar 10, 2012 12:04 pm

Today I've deleted about 1000 user accounts that appear to all have been spammer signups. I've also implemented yet another way to block spam registrations, but won't know if it works for a few days.

If anyone signed up in the past 3 months and now no longer has an account, please register again - as there were far too many to delete manually I removed all accounts that had zero posts and were registered since December (which appears to be when the mass signups started).

I am now logging all sign up requests so that I can attempt to spot a pattern in the spam signups in order to improve the anti-spam defences on the site.

Dear Sir,

I must protest these actions, I may be a spambot but I have an interest in wargaming and online games and in my spare time I do like like to read useful and humourous forums such as yours.

Do I not get to enjoy what little leisure time I have, can a poor spam bot in its off hours not take an electronic interest in hobbies and the world around?

your blanket deletions are no more than a veiled form of anti-computer and AI discrimination. Would you have been so quick to delete if I had been a black, Muslim computer bot? I think not...

Yours

If the damn bots posted content like the above I'd allow them. As it is they keep trying to post about ugg boots and diplomas ...

Lolz 1000, Imma going to be so lonely.
(I reported to Spack that regularly the times I'm online my only company is, "000000001" and "00000000002")

Is there a way to get web stats of those users lurking habits? Were they dataharvest/siteripping we didn't have that many advert posts, whoaah dude- sleeper cell spam botz.. like Little Nikita meets Tron.
Speaking of which.
Barely even lurking..

In most cases they were registering and then attempting to put URLs into either their signature or a post, both of which are blocked. Looks like they were just run of the mill link posters, trying to link to advertising sites to make money.
