Brass scorpion Finally Complete!

Postby Herne » Fri Apr 09, 2010 10:59 pm

I already have several logs running that I am adding to slowly, but currently I am mostly painting for my new 40K army. After a visit to the AOS weekend bash in February I got bitten by the bug for Forgeworld goodies, and started collecting Forgeworld bits for a Khorne / Nurgle army. (Model list below - not necessarily a legal game list, but the models i will choose my force from.) I've started the log to show the development of the painting as I work through the long list of models that need painting......

HQs: Zhufor, 2 x Nurgle sorcerer, Typhus, 2 x Daemon Prince, 3 beasts of nurgle for the 'gift of chaos' psychic power.

Elites: Nurgle Dreadnought, Nurgle Terminators, Khorne Terminators, 16 Plaguemarine chosen, 2 x Landraiders (ded transports)

Troops: 50 Plague Marines (GW - one unit from the rogue trader days!) 10 Plague Marines (Fworld) 10 'zerkers (Fworld) 10 Bloodletters, 10 Plaguebearers

Fast: Blight drone

Heavy: 2 hellblades, 2 Blood slaughterers, Bloodslaughterer impaler

Transport: 8 Rhinos all with FW doors, some with FW ex arm

The basic premise of the army is 'Resin' Every model, even the GW ones, will have some resin - to accomplish this I'm buying resin bases for all the models. Khorne stuff will have skull pile bases, whilst Nurgle stuff will have some 'churned earth' bases I've been hanging onto for a long time. I've even found some excellent oval bases with skull piles for my blood slaughterers.

Here goes then..... :)

Here's the first units then:

These were painted with a mixture of drybrushing, then dipping, then de-shining, then some over-painting on details.

The second unit now - Plaguebearers.....

I dipped these guys. The red gore is carefully applied Tamiya clear red, which dries translucent. Adding a small amount of pigment powders helps make it look thick and crusty in places.

Here are the Hellblades - I had already painted these a while ago, so can't claim them for the Q2 log, but at the end of the day - they are part of the army in this Plog, so here they are....

it's my second attempt at dipping, the Fantasy bloodletters I did were the first. I decided to 'develop the method' with starker drybrush layers, and the overpainting to see what I could achieve.

I like to 'push the envelope' with techniques - next week I am considering dip, then jelly, then a spray with creosote, followed by gold-leaf..... Should make for a lovely nurgling. :D

I've decided i don't like the FW khorne terminators too much. Having read the fluff on Zhufor in Vraks part 3 I like the idea of his Bodyguard - the skull takers. Part of the premise of this list is to add some of the older models from the rogue trader days - I loved the old renegade marines - they had a character that has been missing for a while with some of the more modern stuff, and the renegade nurgle stuff still fits in perfectly with the current model ranges. For Zhufors termie escort I'm gonna use 5 exo-armoured chaos squats that have been lying around my chaos case for a few years. Theyr're unique and will look funny on those huge 40mm bases. Kind of Zhufors 'Angry Young men' or 'Zhufor and the diddy men'

Yeah, I now paint base colours, do some hightlights, dip and then re-highlight. Still quick but you get a much better result.

Spent the last few days drilling tiny holes, gluing on sand and making buboes and blisters out of green stuff to convert a landraider to the cause of Nurgle! Hands are now SORE! I want the nurgle vehicles to look suitably infested without doing what I've seen so many do and make the shape of the vehicle into a blob with OTT green stuffing and huge chunks of other models glued on.

The LR will have slightly more gunk on it than the rhinos as the rhinos are smaller models, but hopefully the effect will be good. I'll try and remember to take some WIP photos soon.

Just a WIP update - Here are the first works on the Nurgle LR - green stuffed buboes and crusted filth or fly clusters modelled using sand. Gratuitously robbed the idea from someone else, but when painted it looks effective.

More work to do yet, including Forgeworld deathguard doors and some re-modelling of the hatches....

Tempting, but I cant find a supplier that will sell me a bottle cheap. For a few small effect on the odd couple of models, and the odd future base I don't want to spend £6 or £8 quid on a tub....
Looking again I'm now beginning to worry I've gone ott on the Green Stuff. Can't decide wether I like it or wether I want it more minimalistic.

Looks ok to me.

Leave it out in the garden and let the snails do the work ;)
