Houserules: Single Models & Unit Types

Postby Baragash » Tue Jun 07, 2011 9:37 am

Old-timer alert! ;)

So, back in the shift from 5th to 6th GW gave with one hand and took with the other. No surprises there [/cynicism]

Gave: Chariots got combined profiles
Took: Started doing stupid things with characters mounted on what are now called Monstrous Beasts, whereby you could sacrifice some heroic grunts to unhorse Tyrion/Archon/generic character of killy death so they just wondered about the battlefield begging people to come fight them until their ward save failed to prevent war-machine-to-the-face.

But I'm rambling now..... ;)

So I was drafting my homebrew 8th Ed HE book last night and I started wondering: should Fantasy handle all mounted characters the same ie as a hybrid single model profile like cavalry, chariots, monstrous cavalry etc?

That's basically how the new monster units are being handled, like the War Sphinx and the Arachna..... Big Spider thing ;) and how 40k deals with mounting characters.

It solves:
  • How many hits does a template cause?
  • Lack of correct model when mount dies
  • Lack of interest in mounting characters that can't pack a decent ward save (because at least they'd get a T, W and maybe Sv boost)
  • Lack of interest in mounting non-fighty characters (yeah, it was the Dragon Mage that kicked off this train of thought, but also criticisms of Azhag in the new O&G book)
  • Lack of balance (IMO) of war machines vs monsters in 8th Ed

I'm ok with ward saves protecting the whole model, the only real issue I see is how magic armour interacts with the whole model (and indeed armour in general). Oh, and what if the model carries the Banner of Rage.......

Thoughts?

(IIRC when TK appeared as a WD list for the very first time, chariot-mounted Princes and Kings had single profiles).

Anything to make things simpler :)

Perhaps you'd have to put a restriction of what types of armour could be worn... although that's becoming less simple again.

Well there's two parts:

1) Is the normal armour save stacking process appropriate on a monster? Well TBH I think it probably works fine as long as the monster doesn't have a save of it's own. A Great Stag with a 2+ save for the whole model is just slightly better cavalry, even a Griffon would only be a little tougher than, say, Bloodcrushers. I think Dragons are where it requires a think, though Greater Daemons and Kholek get a decent AS in some cases, so it's not outrageous, just needs a little care.

2) Are any of the magical effects of the Armour horribly unfun?. Armour of Silvered Steel is probably ok (given zombie dragons are -1 to hit and that only becomes a pain in combo with other items). Good, re-rollable saves might be a little questionable.

I've done the Skaven ones if anyone has any feedback.

In the case of the non-Chariots, the unit type has been deliberately chosen to avoid the mount being a big "shoot me, shoot me!" sign when the model is in a unit. The Bonebreaker's wounds are used as that is how Monstrous Cavalry would apply the rule.

Next up (in unknown order): High Elves, Warriors, Tomb Kings.

EDIT: just realised I used the wrong T value on the Bonebreaker Warlord, should be the 'breaker's T5.
